Job summary

SYOS Aerospace is seeking a Systems Design Engineer in Mount Maunganui, New Zealand, to shape architecture, integration, and validation of autonomous unmanned systems. You will translate stakeholder needs into clear system designs and ensure performance across hardware, software, and autonomy teams.

This role focuses on defining subsystems, interfaces, and verification strategies, coordinating across disciplines to deliver reliable, high-performance solutions for cutting-edge UxV technologies.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Systems Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, Electronics Engineering, Computer Engineering, or related field.
  • 3+ years of systems engineering experience, preferably in aerospace, robotics, or autonomous systems.
  • Strong understanding of systems architecture, requirements management, and integration.
  • Experience with JIRA, Confluence and DOORS.
  • Familiarity with testing and validation methodologies across hardware and software.
  • Excellent communication, collaboration, and problem-solving skills.

Responsibilities

  • Collaborate with stakeholders to gather, analyze, and document functional and non-functional system requirements.
  • Translate high-level needs into detailed, verifiable system requirements and manage them throughout the project lifecycle.
  • Develop and maintain system architecture, defining major subsystems and their interfaces for seamless integration.
  • Evaluate and compare technical design options to select the most effective and efficient architecture.
  • Create and maintain interface control documents (ICDs) to ensure subsystems communicate effectively.
  • Plan and coordinate the integration of hardware and software components into unified, reliable systems.
  • Design and execute rigorous testing strategies to verify system performance and validate that all requirements are met.
  • Analyze test results, identify root causes of anomalies, and work collaboratively to troubleshoot and resolve issues.
  • Serve as a central communication hub between engineering teams to facilitate system-wide coherence and collaboration.
  • Support continuous improvement by feeding test and performance insights back into system designs.

As a Systems Design Engineer, you will be instrumental in shaping the architecture, integration, and validation of our cutting-edge autonomous systems. You will lead the translation of stakeholder needs into clear system designs and ensure these complex systems perform reliably across all domains. This role is cross-functional, working closely with teams across hardware, software, and autonomy to deliver cohesive, high-performance solutions.

Job Responsibilities

Preferred Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in Systems Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, Electronics Engineering, Computer Engineering, or related field.
  • 3+ years of experience in systems engineering, preferably in aerospace, robotics, or autonomous systems.
  • Strong understanding of systems architecture, requirements management, and system integration.
  • Experience with tools such as JIRA, Confluence and DOORS.
  • Familiarity with testing and validation methodologies across hardware and software.
  • Excellent communication, collaboration, and problem-solving skills.
Bonus Experience
  • Experience working on unmanned vehicles (UAVs, UUVs, or USVs).
  • Knowledge of autonomy systems and embedded software development.
