Job summary

Qualifications

Responsibilities

• Study blueprints, drawings and specs to determine job, material and equipment needs.
• Select metal stock (stainless, galvanised, mild steel, aluminium, copper) and check sizes against specs.
• Mark out stock using templates, gauges and reference points.
• Cut stock along guidelines using hand/power tools.
• Shape and form stock using folding/bending equipment.
• Weld, rivet, solder, braze and assemble components into final products.
• Finish products by polishing, filing and cleaning assembled items.
• Repair damaged sheet metal products and components when needed.
• Specialize in fabrication or on-site assembly/installations of sheet metal items.
• Possibly produce aircraft sheet metal components requiring advanced drawing/calculation skills.

Seeking a skilled Sheet Metal Trade Worker for light fabrication, TIG/MIG welding, and machine operation in Southland. ($28–$35/hr, 30–60 hrs/week).

About the Role

We are seeking a skilled and reliable Sheet Metal Trade Worker to join our team in Southland. Working on a variety of commercial, industrial, and specialized light fabrication projects, you will be responsible for reading technical drawings, cutting, folding, shaping, and welding sheet metals (stainless steel, aluminium , and mild steel) to high standards.

What You’ll Be Doing

• Studying blueprints, drawings and specifications to determine job, material and equipment requirements
• Selecting metal stock, such as stainless steel, galvanised iron, mild steel, aluminium and copper, and checking sizes, gauges and other dimensions of metal stock against specifications
• Marking out metal stock with reference points and lines, using templates, gauges and other measuring instruments
• Cutting metal stock along guidelines using hand and power shears, guillotines and drills
• Shaping and forming cut metal stock into products using folding and bending machines, rollers, presses and hammers
• Fitting and assembling components into final products by welding, riveting, soldering, brazing and otherwise joining
• Finishing products by polishing, filing, sanding and cleaning assembled products
• May repair damaged Sheetmetal products and components
• May specialise in fabrication, or on-site assembly and installation, of Sheetmetal products
• May produce aircraft sheet metal components requiring advanced drawing and calculating skills

• Minimum 2 years of relevant experience or relevant qualifications.
• Strong proficiency in TIG/MIG welding light metals and operating press brakes/guillotines.
• Ability to read and work accurately from technical shop drawings.Physically fit, detail-oriented, and committed to high quality and workshop safety standards.
• Competitive hourly rates ($28 – $35/hr dependent on experience)
• Minimum of 30 hours guaranteed per week (permanent full-time), maximum of 60 hours per week
