Job summary

Bioeconomy Science Institute in Rotorua offers a Summer Student Intern position to help reduce water use in moulded fibre packaging. You will join the Sustainable Materials team, gaining hands-on experience with fibre-foam technologies and support for innovative packaging solutions.

The role provides mentorship from senior researchers, practical lab exposure, and opportunities to develop data analysis and scientific communication skills within a world-class science environment.

Qualifications

• Currently studying towards a tertiary qualification in science, engineering, materials science, or related discipline.
• Strong practical skills and interest in hands-on laboratory/workshop or prototype development.
• Analytical and problem-solving skills with an interest in sustainable materials and applied research.
• Strong communication and teamwork; CAD experience with SolidWorks advantageous.

Responsibilities

• Support laboratory experiments, prototype manufacture, and testing of fibre-foam and moulded fibre packaging tech.
• Review literature and contribute to planning experimental approaches.
• Collect, analyse, and interpret data on product performance and manufacturing processes.
• Prepare reports and presentations summarising project findings and recommendations.
• Learn from experienced researchers in a collaborative scientific environment.
