Job summary

Khokan Engineering Limited, a Christchurch-based fabrication company, is seeking structural welders/fabricators for our Timaru workshop in Canterbury. Immediate start available with a minimum of 30 hours per week on day shifts or rostered as required.

Must pass pre-employment checks and be able to work in a multi-cultural environment with a valid resident visa. Typical duties include MIG, TIG, and Flux Core welding, fabricating components from drawings, cutting and shaping metal, and ensuring

Qualifications

• Minimum 5 years welding experience.
• Experience with structural steel.
• Reads and interprets weld symbols and drawings.
• Familiar with distortion and heat application.
• Flux-core welding experience (advantage).
• Back-gouging experience.
• Able to operate cranes and heavy equipment.

Responsibilities

• Perform MIG, TIG, and manual ARC welding.
• Fabricate and assemble structural components.
• Read blueprints and technical drawings.
• Prepare metal stock and materials.
• Cut metal with hand tools and flame cutters.
• Shape and bend metal sections.
• Join components with welding, bolting, or riveting.
• Operate CNC and metalworking equipment.
• Inspect welds for strength and compliance.
• Finish surfaces by grinding and polishing.
• Maintain safe, tidy workspace.

• Can read and interpret drawings
• Is familiar with distortion and application of heat
• Experience in Fluxcore welding, holds ticket (advantageous)

• Competent with using overhead gantry cranes

Key Duties and Responsibilities

• Perform welding using MIG, TIG, and Manual ARC techniques
• Fabricate and assemble structural metal components and systems
• Read and interpret blueprints, technical drawings, and job specifications
• Select, clean, and prepare metal stock and materials
• Cut metal sections using hand tools, flame cutters, and metal-cutting machines
• Shape and bend metal sections and pipes using tools, machines, or heat and hammering
• Align and join metal components using welding, bolting, or riveting
• Operate and maintain CNC and other metalworking equipment (folders, cutters, etc.)
• Inspect and test welds for strength, accuracy, and compliance
• Finish products by grinding, polishing, filing, or chemical treatments
• Follow health and safety standards and maintain a tidy, well-organised workspace Support general workshop and production activities as require

What We’re Looking For

• Minimum 3 years of verifiable welding/fabrication experience, or
• Level 4 qualification in a relevant field (e.g. welding, fabrication, mechanical engineering)
• Ability to work independently and interpret technical instructions
• Physically fit with strong attention to detail and quality
• Willingness to undergo a pre-employment drug screening if required
