Job summary

Dotmatics is seeking a Staff Software Engineer, Front End to shape the architecture and development of a data-rich web application used by scientists worldwide. You will apply deep TypeScript and Angular expertise to build scalable, high-performance user experiences for complex scientific workflows.

The role is hybrid with the Auckland office, requiring 1–3 days in the office weekly. The candidate will collaborate across teams to deliver robust UI components and tooling for research workflows.

Qualifications

• 10+ years of experience building production-grade web applications.
• Bachelor’s or Advanced Degree in Computer Science or a related field, or equivalent practical experience.

Responsibilities

• Drive the architecture of the Angular front end and establish reusable component libraries and standards.
• Own the UI end-to-end, write high-quality, well-tested code, and manage deployment and security as part of a DevSecOps team.
• Serve as a technical authority on front-end best practices, mentoring engineers and raising engineering standards.
• Collaborate with colleagues and customers to gather requirements and iterate on designs.
• Contribute to testing, documentation and support as part of a cross-functional team.

What do we need

We are seeking a Staff Software Engineer, Front End to join our Geneious team at Dotmatics. In this role you will help shape the architecture and development of a sophisticated, data-rich web application used by scientists and researchers around the world. You will bring deep expertise in TypeScript and Angular to build performant, scalable, and intuitive user experiences that make complex scientific workflows feel effortless.

This is a hybrid position. Our office is based in central Auckland, ideally you will be in the office 1- 3 days per week.

Geneious is one of the leading bioinformatics solutions internationally, used by thousands of organisations from big pharma to researchers in universities. Our software directly supports scientists working in a wide range of important fields from development of lifesaving therapeutics and vaccines through to climate change and food security.

In this role you will get to:

• Drive the architecture of our Angular front end. Establishing the patterns, reusable component libraries, and standards that keep the Geneious web frontend scalable and maintainable as it grows.
• Together with your team, own the UI end to end. From writing high-quality, well-tested code to managing its deployment and security as part of a team that practices DevSecOps
• Serve as a technical authority on front end best practices, mentoring engineers and raising the engineering bar through design and code reviews.
• Collaborate regularly with colleagues and customers to establish requirements and iterate on designs.
• As part of a cross-functional development team, take on testing, documentation and support when needed.

We are looking for people who

have 10+ years of experience building production-grade web applications, with a track record of owning front end architecture and delivering complex features at scale. A Bachelor’s or Advanced Degree in Computer Science or a related field, or equivalent practical experience is required.

Knowledge of Biology is not required

as we have a team of scientists who will help you learn. You will be an engineer that prides themselves on getting things done!

The key skills we are looking for are:

• Deep expertise in TypeScript and Angular, including component architecture, reactive programming with RxJS, and state management patterns.
• Experience designing and implementing scalable component libraries and shared front end systems.
• Strong understanding of front end performance optimization, accessibility, and cross-browser compatibility.
• Proficiency with modern front end tooling, including build systems, testing frameworks, CI/CD pipelines, and front-end security practices.

You may also have:

• Comfort using AI coding assistants (e.g. Claude Code) as part of a modern development workflow.
• Experience with data visualization libraries, custom charting, or canvas-based rendering (e.g. HTML5 Canvas).
• Experience working on scientific, bioinformatics, or data-intensive web applications.
• Familiarity with cloud-based front end deployment and CDN strategies, particularly on AWS.
