Job summary

A local eatery in Nelson is seeking an experienced Sous Chef to assist the Head Chef in leading the kitchen team. You will have the opportunity to work with fresh, seasonal ingredients and develop your culinary skills in a supportive environment. The role involves overseeing kitchen operations, menu planning, and training kitchen staff. Ideal candidates will have strong leadership and organizational skills with at least 3 years of experience. We’re on the lookout for a talented Sous Chef to join our passionate team at River Kitchen. Based in the heart of Nelson, right on the banks of the Maitai River, we’re a proudly local business with a diverse team who share one big love: creating memorable hospitality experiences.

We specialise in delicious, seasonally inspired food, complemented by New Zealand craft beers, local wines, and freshly roasted coffee. From breakfast through to lunch, our full menu celebrates fresh ingredients, while our cabinet is always filled with house-baked scones, muffins, and sweet treats.

What you’ll be working on

  • Assist the Head Chef with menu planning, recipe development, and food presentation.
  • Oversee daily kitchen operations, ensuring food is prepared to the highest standards.
  • Supervise, train, and mentor kitchen staff.
  • Ensure compliance with food safety, hygiene, and health standards.
  • Manage inventory, stock control, and ordering of supplies.
  • Step in to lead the kitchen in the absence of the Head Chef.

About you – preferred requirements for this role

  • 3 years’ experience as a Sous Chef or in a similar senior kitchen role.
  • Good knowledge with catering and events
  • Excellent organisational and leadership skills.
  • Ability to thrive under pressure and maintain attention to detail.
  • Certificate in Culinary Arts (or equivalent qualification) preferred.
  • Baking experience is a bonus
  • Available for 35-40 hours a week
  • Weekends and weekdays are a must but mostly daytime shifts.
