Health New Zealand - Te Whatu Ora – Takapuna, North Island

  • Based at North Shore and Waitākere Hospitals
  • Permanent, full-time role (1.0 FTE, 80 hours per fortnight)
  • A key leadership role for an experienced sonographer passionate about clinical excellence

Health New Zealand | Te Whatu Ora is firmly grounded in the principles of Te Tiriti o Waitangi and is committed to building a health system that serves all New Zealanders.

About the role

As the Sonographer Team Leader, you will provide clinical and operational leadership for the ultrasound service across North Shore and Waitākere Hospitals, ensuring the delivery of safe, high-quality, and efficient patient care. This role combines advanced clinical practice with team leadership, service coordination, workforce development, and quality management.

Working closely with radiology leadership and multidisciplinary teams, you will oversee day-to-day service delivery, support and develop sonographers and trainees, drive continuous improvement initiatives, maintain professional and quality standards, and ensure timely access to ultrasound services for both acute and elective patients. This is a key leadership position for an experienced sonographer who is passionate about clinical excellence, staff development, and delivering outstanding patient outcomes.

About us

The Ultrasound Service at Health New Zealand Waitematā operates across 11 scanning rooms, including 9 ultrasound rooms within Radiology and dedicated antenatal clinic scanning services supporting our Maternity colleagues at North Shore and Waitākere Hospitals.

Our sonographers work closely with RMOs and SMOs on a daily basis within a collaborative multidisciplinary environment. We have recently commenced contrast-enhanced ultrasound services and also support our Mammography department, with sonographers providing breast ultrasound examinations as part of that team.

The service receives approximately 3,400 ultrasound referrals each month and cares for around 1,760 patients across our sites. As part of our commitment to improving access for the community, we are exploring the expansion of elective weekend ultrasound services.

Health New Zealand | Te Whatu Ora Waitematā provides health services to approximately 650,000 residents of the North Shore, Waitakere, and Rodney areas. It has the largest population of any district health area.

You will bring at least five years' post-qualification experience and strong competency across general ultrasound, including obstetric, abdominal and small parts imaging.

You'll have excellent communication, organisational and problem-solving skills, a collaborative and patient-centred approach, and the ability to lead, support and develop others within a multidisciplinary environment. A commitment to quality improvement, cultural responsiveness, and equitable health outcomes is essential.

Ideally, you'll also have specialist ultrasound expertise, experience teaching or mentoring Sonographers, MRTB supervisor status, and/or a recognised specialist postgraduate qualification.
