Job summary

Trimble Inc. in Christchurch is seeking a Software Engineer (C++/Angular) to help evolve cloud-connected embedded systems for Earthworks machinery. You will bridge embedded C++ control software with modern web applications, working within CTCT to deliver high-value solutions.

Qualifications

  • Tertiary qualification in CS/Engineering/Mechatronics or equivalent.
  • Extensive embedded C++ development experience.
  • Experience building web apps using Angular and TypeScript.
  • Full lifecycle software engineering: requirements, automated tests, CI/CD and documentation.

Responsibilities

  • Develop cross-platform Earthworks features to enable heavy machinery commissioning and operation.
  • Build robust embedded Linux software in C++ and web applications with Angular/TypeScript.
  • Contribute to distributed system architecture with clearly defined subdomains.
  • Collaborate with global teams across sites to deliver customer value.
  • Apply engineering best practices to ensure predictability, quality and continuous delivery.

Caterpillar Trimble Control Technologies (CTCT):
The CTCT division (a joint venture between Trimble and Caterpillar) develops positioning and control products for earthmoving and paving machines in the construction and mining industries, using technologies such as GPS, optical total stations, lasers, and sonics. What Makes This Role Great
In this role, you will be key to developing and evolving our flagship Earthworks system, bridging embedded C++ control systems with cloud connectivity and modern web applications. You'll work in a collaborative global engineering framework where your contributions directly improve machine productivity, operator safety, and jobsite efficiency.
Key Exciting Responsibilities
  • Drive Earthworks Evolution: Develop dynamic, cross-platform system features with a strong focus on enabling customers to commission and operate heavy machinery productively using a wide array of sensing devices.
  • Build Embedded & Web Solutions: Write robust embedded Linux software using C++ while crafting modern web applications with Angular, TypeScript, HTML, and CSS.
  • Architect Distributed Systems: Contribute to distributed system architecture by identifying subdomains and establishing bounded contexts.
  • Collaborate Globally: Work alongside domain experts and software engineers across international sites to deliver customer value.
  • Champion Engineering Excellence: Apply fundamental engineering practices to ensure predictability, high quality, and continuous improvement in the delivery lifecycle.
Essential Skills & Experience
  • Relevant tertiary qualification in Computer Science, Engineering, Mathematics, Mechatronics, or equivalent practical experience.
  • Solid professional experience developing embedded software in C++.
  • Hands-on experience building web applications using TypeScript and Angular (or other modern JavaScript frameworks).
  • Demonstrated experience in full lifecycle software engineering, including specification, automated testing, CI/CD, and technical documentation.

  • Experience working with embedded devices in industrial or IoT settings.
  • Strong collaboration and communication skills within global, cross-functional teams.
