Position Description

Our Co-operative

Ata whakaarohia tō āpōpō | Imagine Tomorrow with Us

At Te Mātāpuna Fonterra, we want everyone to feel they can be themselves. Whether you're early in your career or ready for your next step, Fonterra offers a unique opportunity to grow with a global dairy co-operative that values care, collaboration, and contribution. Owned by New Zealand dairy farmers and supported by a dedicated team, we are all working together to create a better future. Imagine tomorrow with us, where your career can grow, and you can create positive change.

Mō tēnei tūranga | About the Opportunity

This isn’t your typical engineering role. As a Software Engineer in Fonterra’s Commodity Risk & Trading (CR&T) team, you’ll be building the systems that power a multi-billion-dollar trading business, where physical supply chains meet financial markets. You’ll be designing and developing the tools that enable asset-backed trading, portfolio shaping, origination, and real-time execution. From algorithmic trading platforms to risk pricing engines, your work will directly influence trading decisions, risk management, and P&L outcomes. You’ll collaborate closely with traders, quants, and risk managers to solve real business problems, not just ship tickets. Expect to work on systems where correctness, performance, and reliability are critical, and where your code has a direct line to the business. This is a team that values curiosity, craft, and challenge. You’ll be encouraged to ask “why,” challenge assumptions, and propose better ways, all while seeing the tangible impact of your work every day.

Mōu | About You

You’re not just a coder, you’re a problem solver who’s driven by purpose and precision. You care deeply about software quality and maintainability, and you’re motivated by the chance to build systems that matter.

You Bring

  • A strong foundation in modern full-stack development (Python, Node.js, TypeScript, GraphQL)
  • Experience with cloud-native infrastructure (Azure, Docker/K8s, Terraform) and CI/CD pipelines
  • A track record of building robust, production-grade systems - ideally in finance, trading, or other complex domains
  • A curious mindset and a desire to understand the “why” behind the business logic
  • Confidence to work autonomously, challenge assumptions, and shape solutions from first principles
  • A collaborative spirit and the ability to work closely with technical and non-technical stakeholders
  • A passion for building new things - not just maintaining the status quo
