Job summary

Oranga Tamariki—Ministry for Children is recruiting a social worker to join the Multi-Agency Hub at the National Contact Centre, Grey Lynn, Auckland. This fixed-term role ends 30 June 2027 and involves collaborative practice with NZ Police, Corrections, Health Education and MSD to support tamariki and rangatahi when a sole parent or carer is in prison.

You will complete initial assessments, liaise with frontline social workers, engage whānau and alternative carers, and contribute to risk

Qualifications

• Must hold full registration with New Zealand Social Work Registration Board (SWRB).
• A social worker qualification recognised by the SWRB.

Mō te tūnga| About the role

We are recruiting for a social worker to join an exciting project in the Multi-Agency Hub based at the National Contact Centre, Grey Lynn. This is fixed term position ending on 30th June 2027.

Roles in our Multi-Agency Hub

This is an exciting opportunity to be part of a prototype working collaboratively across multiple agencies to support tamariki or rangatahi who have had a sole parent or carer go to prison.

• You will be co-located at the NCC, Grey Lynn with partners from NZ Police, Corrections, Health Education and Ministry of Social Development.
• You will liaise with frontline site Social Workers to co-ordinate and respond to critical and non critical situations as they arise in and outside of normal working hours.
• You will be engaging directly with whānau, the sole parent or carer in prison and alternative carers to seek their views, understand needs and strengths and ensure they are able to participate in decision making.
• You will focus on hearing tamariki and rangatahi voices and support them and their whānau to make decisions/plans at a challenging time in their lives.
• You will be working with various cultural groups and people from different backgrounds.
• You will complete initial assessments for tamariki, rangatahi and whānau.
• You will be testing and learning new ways of working and constantly changing and flexing to improve quality practice and respond to operational demands.
• Auckland location is a requirement for this role and you must be prepared to work from NCC, Grey Lynn 5days a week. 9:30am to 6pm.

Ngā ūmanawatanga ôu | What you will bring

Key requirements for this role include:

• Full registration with New Zealand's Social Work Registration Board (SWRB)
• A social worker qualification recognised by the SWRB
• The ability to analyse and manage risk (including escalation of risk) and identify the needs of tamariki
• Ability to make tough decisions quickly and in a fast-paced environment including developing initial safety plans
• Excellent verbal communication skills with the ability to adapt to your audience
• Great written skills as you will need to write initial assessments and other documents as part of this mahi
• Understanding and appreciation of cross-cultural practices in particular; knowledge of tikanga Māori, and Pacific peoples' culture
• Must have at least 2 years of Intake and Assessment Experience
