Overview

Are you passionate about shaping the future of transport in Nelson? Do you have the technical expertise and strategic mindset to guide projects that make a real difference for our community? Nelson City Council is seeking a highly skilled Senior Transport Planner to join our Infrastructure team and play a pivotal role in delivering sustainable, safe, and efficient transport solutions.

About the role

As a Senior Transport Planner, you will help lead the development of transport policies, strategies, and projects that shape Nelson’s future, providing expert technical advice and working collaboratively to create safe, sustainable, and efficient transport networks.

As a Unitary Authority we also oversee public transport planning and operations. Experience in public transport planning would be preferred.

Responsibilities
  • Provide specialist technical advice on land transport, planning, and transport matters such as parking/active transport strategies etc.
  • Develop and oversee business cases to support capital and operational investment.
  • Supporting the team with resource consents applications, bylaws, regional land and PT transport plans.
  • Represent transport at Council and Regional Transport Committees.
  • Mentor and support other staff, sharing your knowledge and fostering professional growth.
  • Engage with iwi, community stakeholders, and central government on key transport issues.
About you

You will bring:

  • A relevant tertiary qualification (Engineering, Planning, or similar).
  • Proven experience in transport planning, strategic development and policy analysis.
  • A knowledge of transport modelling, data analysis, GIS, and RMA processes.
  • Excellent communication and relationship-building skills, with the ability to engage across Council, community, and government.
  • Strong time management, judgement, and leadership qualities.
  • A collaborative approach and commitment to delivering positive outcomes for Nelson.
