Job description

Mō te tūranga | About the Role

As a Senior Software Engineer in the Payments Engineering team, you will play a critical role in designing, building, and maintaining resilient, scalable, and secure platforms that power international payments and high-value transaction systems. You will work across virtualised and containerised environments using VMware, Kubernetes, and OpenShift, engineering Java-based applications that integrate via IBM MQ, REST, and SOAP APIs. You will bring the midset of “you build it, you run it” and holistic expertise in infrastructure as code (IaC) using CloudBees, Terraform, and Chef, observability tools like Dynatrace and Splunk, and solid software engineering practices. While your primary focus initially will be platform engineering uplift, your understanding of software engineering principles will help bridge the gap and change the culture across the team.

You will lead the delivery of simple solutions by solving complex engineering problems, mentor engineers, and collaborate across payments engineering to drive innovation and excellence in the payment’s domain.

Ngā Haepapa Matua | Key Responsibilities

  • Lead the design and implementation of solutions for international and high-value payment systems.
  • Drive delivery of engineering initiatives, ensuring quality through automated testing, safe deployment practices, performance monitoring, and readiness assessments.
  • Drive assessable devops practices and tooling which enabled all engineers to adopt “you build it, you run it”.
  • Collaborate within cross-functional teams to story map epics, estimate work, and manage risk to meet sprint goals.
  • Maintain and evolve infrastructure using IaC tools (Terraform, Chef, CloudBees) and Git-based workflows.
  • Ensure observability and operational excellence using Dynatrace and Splunk.
  • Promote best practices in engineering, including container orchestration, messaging integration, and secure API connectivity.
  • Mentor and support team members, fostering a culture of continuous learning and collaboration.
  • Stay current with industry trends and apply relevant innovations to improve engineering capabilities.

Nā tāu rourou | What will you bring?

  • At least 8 years of commercial experience with engineering with a strong focus on Java or similar languages such as C#.
  • Proficiency in modern engineering practices such as contract first design, feature flagging and TDD.
  • Proven experience in engineering platforms within complex, high-throughput domains —ideally in payments or financial services.
  • Expertise in CI/CD, infrastructure automation and provisioning tools (Terraform, Chef, CloudBees or similar).
  • Knowledge of containerisation and virtualisation technologies (Kubernetes, OpenShift, VMware)
  • Strong background in integration patterns using IBM MQ, REST, and SOAP APIs.
  • Expertise in observability and monitoring using Dynatrace and Splunk.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead delivery, solve complex problems, and influence across teams.
  • Excellent communication skills with the ability to explain technical concepts clearly and empathetically.
  • A collaborative mindset with a passion for mentoring and enabling others.
