Job summary

Westpac New Zealand is seeking a Senior Backend Engineer to lead payments-focused development across Java/Spring Boot backends, front-end touchpoints, and payments processing capabilities. You will guide engineering best practices, mentor peers, and collaborate with product and platform partners to deliver scalable, resilient solutions.

The role emphasizes technical leadership, code quality, and governance, with responsibilities spanning design, development, testing, and continuous improvement

Qualifications

• 5+ years of backend engineering experience in Java and Spring Boot.
• Experience with DevOps, CI/CD pipelines, containers and deployment automation.
• Strong unit testing, code reviews and debugging skills.
• Solid understanding of software architecture and design principles.
• Integrates AI effectively into engineering workflows and coaches others on responsible AI practices.

Responsibilities

• Design, develop, test, and maintain applications and integration solutions.
• Troubleshoot and resolve technical issues promptly, and participate in afterhours support when required.
• Ensure best practices in design, coding standards, performance, and security.
• Create and maintain documentation throughout the SDLC to support transparency and knowledge sharing.
• Implement changes aligned with design specifications and evolving business needs.
• Analyse recurring issues and lead continuous improvement initiatives.
• Maintain and refine support procedures to ensure resilience and minimise downtime.
• Ensure compliance with governance standards.
