Job summary

Air New Zealand is seeking a Senior Software Engineer to shape the next generation of digital products and platforms. You will influence technical direction, solve complex engineering challenges, and contribute to AI-assisted software development across critical platforms.

You will join the Software Engineering Chapter, collaborating with engineers, architects, and product teams to deliver scalable cloud-native solutions and high-value customer experiences.

Qualifications

  • Extensive backend software engineering experience in modern cloud environments.
  • Designs APIs, distributed systems, and microservices architectures.
  • Deep expertise in Java and Spring Boot.
  • Strong experience with AWS and event-driven tech like Kafka.
  • Influences architecture, technical direction, and coding standards.
  • Mentors engineers and fosters engineering excellence.
  • Curiosity for AI-enabled software engineering.

Responsibilities

  • Design and deliver scalable REST APIs and event-driven microservices for millions of interactions.
  • Lead development of cloud-native applications using Java, Spring Boot, and AWS.
  • Drive architecture decisions for reliability, security, scalability, and performance in distributed systems.
  • Mentor engineers and promote best practices across the engineering chapter.
  • Champion modern engineering practices and AI-assisted software development.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to deliver high-quality digital products that create customer value.

As a Senior Software Engineer, you'll influence the technical direction of critical platforms, solve complex engineering challenges, and help build the capabilities that power millions of customer journeys.

You'll join our Software Engineering Chapter, where you'll collaborate with talented engineers, architects, and product teams while helping drive our evolution toward Agentic Software Engineering. Through AI-assisted tooling and intelligent workflows, you'll help unlock faster delivery, higher quality, and greater engineering impact across our teams.

How you'll make an impact:

  • Design and deliver scalable REST APIs and event-driven microservices that support millions of customer interactions
  • Lead the development of cloud-native applications using Java, Spring Boot, and AWS technologies
  • Drive architecture decisions that improve reliability, security, scalability, and performance across distributed systems
  • Mentor and coach engineers, fostering engineering excellence and knowledge sharing across the chapter
  • Champion modern engineering practices, continuous improvement, and AI-assisted software development
  • Partner with cross-functional teams to deliver high-quality digital products that create measurable customer value

What we're looking for:

  • Extensive backend software engineering experience within modern cloud environments
  • Strong expertise designing APIs, distributed systems, and microservices architectures
  • Deep experience with Java and Spring Boot
  • Strong experience with AWS and event-driven technologies such as Kafka
  • Proven ability to influence architecture, technical direction, and engineering standards
