Job summary

Dotmatics is seeking a Senior Front-end Engineer for the Geneious team in Auckland. You will drive the architecture and technical direction of a data-rich web app used by scientists globally, bringing deep TypeScript and Angular expertise to design performant, scalable user experiences.

This hybrid role is based in central Auckland, with 1-3 days in the office weekly. You will work with a team delivering complex scientific workflows and contribute to secure, maintainable front-end solutions

Qualifications

• 8+ years of experience building production-grade web applications.
• Bachelor's or Advanced Degree in Computer Science or a related field, or equivalent practical experience.
• Biology knowledge not required; scientists will assist learning.

Responsibilities

• Lead the Angular front-end, define architectural patterns, reusable component libraries, and engineering standards.
• Own the UI end-to-end from architecture to deployment and security as part of a DevSecOps team.
• Partner with colleagues and customers to shape requirements, influence design, and iterate on solutions.
• Mentor other engineers, guide testing strategy, documentation standards, and support practices.

What do we need

We are seeking a Senior Front‑end Engineer to join our Geneious team at Dotmatics. In this role you will drive the architecture and technical direction of a sophisticated, data‑rich web application used by scientists and researchers around the world. You will bring deep expertise in TypeScript and Angular to design performant, scalable, and intuitive user experiences that make complex scientific workflows feel effortless.

This is a hybrid position. Our office is based in central Auckland, ideally you will be in the office 1-3 days per week.

Geneious is one of the leading bioinformatics solutions internationally, used by thousands of organisations from big pharma to researchers in universities. Our software directly supports scientists working in a wide range of important fields from development of lifesaving therapeutics and vaccines through to climate change and food security.

In this role you will get to:

• Lead the development of our Angular front‑end, defining the architectural patterns, reusable component libraries, and engineering standards that keep the Geneious web front‑end scalable and maintainable as it grows.
• Take end‑to‑end ownership of the UI alongside your team — from architecting and writing high‑quality, well‑tested code to overseeing its deployment and security as part of a team that practices DevSecOps.
• Partner closely with colleagues and customers to shape requirements, influence design direction, and iterate on solutions.
• As a senior member of a cross‑functional development team, guide testing strategy, documentation standards, and support practices, mentoring other engineers along the way.

We are looking for people who have 8+ years of experience building production‑grade web applications, with a proven track record of architecting front‑end systems and delivering complex features at scale. A Bachelor's or Advanced Degree in Computer Science or a related field, or equivalent practical experience is required.

Knowledge of Biology is not required, as we have a team of scientists who will help you learn.

The key skills we are looking for are:

• Deep expertise in TypeScript and Angular, including component architecture, reactive programming with RxJS, and state management patterns.
• Demonstrated experience architecting and implementing scalable component libraries and shared front‑end systems used across teams.
• Proficiency with modern front‑end tooling, including build systems, testing frameworks, CI/CD pipelines, and front‑end security practices.

You may also have:

• Comfort using AI coding assistants (e.g. Claude Code) as part of a modern development workflow.
• Experience with data visualization libraries, custom charting, or canvas‑based rendering (e.g. HTML5 Canvas).
• Experience working on scientific, bioinformatics, or data‑intensive web applications.
• Familiarity with cloud‑based front‑end deployment and CDN strategies, particularly on AWS.
