Job summary

Department of Conservation (DOC) seeks a Senior Operational Policy Advisor to shape operational regulatory policies that elevate performance and provide clear guidance for conservation activities. You will design policies to drive change and support nationwide conservation outcomes, collaborating to ensure equitable and sustainable approaches.

This full-time, fixed-term role (to 29 June 2027) is Wellington-preferred, with other locations possible.

Qualifications

• Experience in regulatory policy, law, or public administration
• Ability to think critically and analytically
• Strong relationship-building skills with senior stakeholders
• Experience leading cross-functional teams
• Ability to translate complex information into clear advice
• Excellent business writing skills
• Desire to contribute to conservation outcomes

Responsibilities

• Operational Policy Design and Advice: lead strategic policy work and provide authoritative advice on complex issues
• Data analysis and frameworks: work with large data sets and codified processes
• Engagement and Collaboration: design policies with stakeholders and regulated parties
• Leadership and Mentoring: guide the policy programme and mentor team members
• Implementation: ensure consistent policy practices nationwide and identify training needs
