Job summary

GHD is seeking a Senior Mechanical Engineer to join our Property & Buildings team in New Zealand. You will lead the design, delivery and verification of mechanical building services, and provide technical leadership across multidisciplinary teams to deliver high-quality outcomes.

Auckland is preferred, with flexibility for other NZ locations, and you will contribute to a diverse portfolio spanning healthcare, education, defence, and commercial sectors while mentoring engineers and ensuring NZ

Qualifications

  • Bachelor/tertiary qualification in Mechanical Engineering.
  • CPEng status or eligibility to obtain in New Zealand.
  • 10+ years of mechanical building services experience in consulting.
  • Experience leading design and delivery of complex building services.
  • Strong HVAC and integrated building services expertise.
  • Proven lead of multidisciplinary teams and stakeholder coordination.
  • Knowledge of NZ regulations and compliance.
  • Excellent client relationship management and business development.
  • Outstanding communication and leadership skills.
  • Mentoring and developing high-performing teams.

Responsibilities

  • Lead design, technical delivery and verification of mechanical building services.
  • Coordinate multidisciplinary project teams to deliver high-quality outcomes.
  • Develop and maintain strong client relationships; identify repeat/new business opportunities.
  • Provide technical leadership through project lifecycles from concept to commissioning.
  • Collaborate with other disciplines.
  • Support project planning, resourcing, risk management, QA and commercial performance.
  • Mentor junior and intermediate engineers.
  • Contribute to business development, proposals and client engagement.
  • Ensure compliance with NZ standards and regulatory requirements.
  • Promote sustainable and innovative engineering solutions.
  • Participate in construction monitoring and stakeholder engagement.

GHD is seeking an experienced and motivated Senior Mechanical Engineer to join our growing Property & Buildings team. This is an exciting opportunity to work on the delivery of complex building services projects, provide technical leadership within and across multidisciplinary teams, and help shape the future of the built environment throughout New Zealand.

Auckland is preferred, however we're open to candidates in other locations where GHD has an office.

Working alongside industry-leading professionals, you will play a key role in delivering innovative and sustainable engineering solutions across a diverse portfolio of projects, including healthcare, education, defence, justice, commercial, infrastructure, transport and public sector developments.

The role
  • Lead the design, technical delivery and verification of mechanical building services solutions across a variety of complex projects.
  • Manage and coordinate multidisciplinary project teams to deliver high-quality outcomes for clients.
  • Develop and maintain strong client relationships, identifying opportunities for repeat and new business.
  • Provide technical leadership and guidance throughout project lifecycles, from concept design through to construction and commissioning.
  • Collaborate with other Mechanical, Electrical, Hydraulic, Fire, Structural, Civil and specialist engineering disciplines.
  • Support project planning, resourcing, risk management, quality assurance and commercial performance.
  • Mentor and develop junior and intermediate engineers, fostering a culture of technical excellence and continuous learning.
  • Contribute to business development activities, proposals and strategic client engagement.
  • Ensure compliance with relevant New Zealand standards, codes and regulatory requirements.
  • Promote sustainable and innovative engineering solutions that deliver long-term value for clients and communities.
  • Participate in construction monitoring, stakeholder engagement and technical reviews as required.
About you
  • Relevant tertiary qualification in Mechanical Engineering or a related discipline.
  • Chartered Professional Engineer (CPEng) status, or ability to obtain CPEng in New Zealand.
  • Minimum of 10+ years' experience in mechanical building services engineering within a consulting environment.
  • Proven experience leading the design and delivery of complex building services projects.
  • Strong technical expertise in HVAC, mechanical services systems and integrated building services design.
  • Demonstrated experience leading multidisciplinary teams and coordinating with internal and external stakeholders.
  • Strong understanding of New Zealand building regulations, standards and compliance requirements.
  • Excellent client relationship management and business development skills.
  • Outstanding communication, leadership and stakeholder engagement capabilities.
  • Passion for mentoring and developing high-performing teams.
  • A collaborative mindset, strong commercial awareness and commitment to delivering exceptional client outcomes.
