Job summary

The Law Commission in Wellington seeks a senior legal researcher and policy analyst to plan and manage law reform projects, conduct rigorous legal research and prepare high-quality advice for the Board and Ministers.

You will engage with public sector agencies and stakeholders, develop well-reasoned reform options, and mentor junior staff while upholding te ao Māori considerations and tikanga Māori as part of reform proposals. Applications close 4 September 2026.

Qualifications

• Strong ability to conduct rigorous legal research and produce well-structured analysis.
• Excellent written and oral communication skills tailored for policy advice.
• Experience in planning and managing complex law reform projects.
• Ability to engage with public sector agencies, communities and stakeholders.

Responsibilities

• Undertake rigorous legal research and analysis to inform high-quality advice.
• Plan and manage substantial or complex workstreams across the lifecycle of law reform projects.
• Identify and analyse legal and policy issues and develop reform options.
• Contribute to policy formulation and strategic thinking within project teams.
• Draft consultation documents, briefings and final reports for the Board.
