Senior Environmental Specialist - Seabirds, joining the Environmental Evaluation and Monitoring Unit. Seabird ecologist with a practical approach to conservation and a passion for Auckland's environment.

Job Details
  • Start Date: October 2025
  • End Date: March 2026
  • Hours Per Week: 40 hours
  • Hourly Rate: $51ph + 8% holiday pay
  • Location: Based in Auckland City Centre, with fieldwork across the Auckland region
What You'll Do

This is a hands-on role at the heart of seabird fieldwork operations. You will plan, manage, and implement a key field monitoring programme, ensuring it runs smoothly, safely, and effectively to help improve Auckland's biodiversity.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Manage and undertake fieldwork operations for the Seabird Monitoring and Research Programme.
  • Oversee logistics for monitoring sites, including remote locations and pest-free islands.
  • Secure all necessary permits and approvals for fieldwork operations.
  • Conduct hands-on monitoring tasks, including handling, banding, and collecting biological samples from seabirds.
  • Ensure biosecurity and health and safety protocols are followed rigorously.
  • Process and validate raw field data and manage associated databases.
  • Contribute to data analysis, interpretation, and reporting.
About You

We are looking for a highly skilled and pragmatic ecologist with a true passion for seabirds. You are a problem-solver with attention to detail and the ability to adapt to challenging field conditions. You understand the realities and logistics necessary for this work and are results-driven.

To be eligible for this role, you should have:

  • A Bachelor's degree in ecology, environmental science, or a related field, or commensurate work experience.
  • Practical experience working with and handling seabirds for research purposes.
  • A Department of Conservation Bird Banding Permit L2+ is required.
  • A strong level of fitness and the ability to work in all terrains and weather conditions, including walking with a backpack for extended periods.
  • Experience managing fieldwork expeditions to remote areas.
  • Excellent organizational and communication skills, with a collaborative approach to working with a diverse range of people, including iwi and landowners.
  • A full and clean driver's license.

Additional Requirements

  • This is a safety-sensitive role, and a pre-employment drug and alcohol test is required.
  • This is a full-time, 40-hour-per-week position that may require some overnight stays on remote islands.
