Mō te tūnga | About the role

As a Senior / Data Engineer in the Data and Performance Insights directorate, you will play a critical role in shaping and delivering New Zealand Police data and analytics capability, ensuring data is trusted, accessible, and effectively leveraged to support strategic and operational decision-making across the organisation.

You will work closely with stakeholders across the business to design, develop and maintain scalable data solutions that enable the delivery of data, information, analytics and applied data science services. This includes the integration of data assets, establishing best practice approaches to data engineering and governance, and ensuring data is accessible, reliable and fit for purpose.

Appointment to a Senior Data Engineer will be based on skills, knowledge and experience relevant to the job requirements. Applicants will be assessed for both vacancies and should identify if they wish to only be considered for a specific position in their application.

To be successful in this role you will require the following:

• Demonstrated experience as a Data Engineer – or similar type roles.
• Contribute to ETL/ELT processes by creating data pipelines, and other data products for consumption for internal use and external organisations.
• A service-oriented mindset, with the ability to operate, contribute, and influence at a senior level to drive improvement in a large and diverse organisation.
• Work in an agile manner - complete tasks both strategically and reactively to respond to changes in our operating environment.
• Excellent written and oral communication skills with the ability to confidently engage with individuals at all levels.
• Experience building and maintaining relationships with key internal and external stakeholders.
• Confident and experienced in using a range of tools, including MS SQL, SAS, command line scripting, Business Objects, R, Python, ArcGIS. Experience with cloud- based computing such as Fabric, Azure, Databricks, AWS, or GCP would be an advantage
• These roles are based in Wellington, and some travel may be required.
• A tertiary qualification in a relevant field is required.

These roles are at Individual Contributor (Data Engineer) or Leading Leaders (Senior Data Engineer) level.

Utu ā-tau | Salary –

This position is covered by a collective agreement, and salary will commence between (Data Engineer) $111,529 and $118,184 or (Snr Data Engineer) $141,421 dependent on skills and experience relevant to the role.
