Job summary

Ministry of Social Development is seeking a Principal Advisor in data and analytics transformation to lead enterprise data initiatives and shape governance practices. Wellington-based, 12-month fixed-term opportunity to drive the future of data for New Zealanders.

The role requires strategic advisory capability, strong change management experience, and collaboration with senior leaders across MSD to deliver data-driven outcomes.

Qualifications

• Significant experience leading or advising in a data or analytics environment.
• Experience in large, complex government organisations undergoing significant change.
• Strong change management principles and experience implementing new processes or operating models.
• Strong data management practices including governance, stewardship, data quality, and master data management.
• Proven ability to engage and influence stakeholders at all levels, including senior leaders and frontline teams.
• Excellent communication and facilitation skills; ability to simplify complex concepts.

Responsibilities

• Provide strategic advice and leadership on enterprise data and analytics initiatives supporting the transformation programme.
• Support delivery of complex pieces of work with organisational change impact.
• Partner with senior leaders and delivery teams to shape key decisions.
• Help define and embed enterprise data stewardship and master data management approaches.
• Support procurement, recruitment, and capability development activities for the team.
• Bridge between business and technology teams to translate concepts into actionable outcomes.
• Support organisational change by building stakeholder readiness and adoption of new data capabilities.
• Identify risks and opportunities in transformation delivery and provide practical recommendations.
• Prepare executive-level reports, briefs, and governance artefacts.
• Contribute to building a high-performing team culture.
