About the Role

The Senior Compliance Officer reports into the National Manager Compliance within the Resource Markets branch, which sits within the Building, Resources and Markets group.

The successful candidate will carry out an active compliance programme to ensure that mining permit holders meet their obligations under the Crown Minerals Act. You will work on a range of compliance activities—from education and engagement through to enforcement. You will collaborate across teams to embed compliance into the wider permit management framework, supporting a consistent and integrated approach.

The Senior Compliance Officer will develop and maintain effective working relationships and networks with other regulators, such as Worksafe, local government, and the Department of Conservation, as well as with quarry and mine operators.

You will work across Energy and Resource Markets, providing technical expertise in collaboration with the Principal Compliance Officer. Your role will involve engaging effectively with senior external stakeholders to ensure well informed decisions, influence key outcomes, and shape negotiations with industry participants.

Skills and Experience Required
  • Proven experience delivering a range of compliance activities, including investigations and prosecutions, to achieve successful regulatory outcomes.
  • Experienced at applying best practice regulation, compliance and enforcement.
  • Experience in the resources sector is desirable; candidates with compliance experience in other sectors are encouraged to apply.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage processes and prioritise available resources effectively to maximise impact.
  • Experience working in an operational or transactional environment.
  • Skilled in building and maintaining effective strategic relationships with stakeholders in government and industry.
  • Ability to influence senior stakeholders, including industry, Government, and Ministers.
  • Tertiary qualification in environmental management, public management, law, or equivalent relevant experience.
  • Must have the legal right to live and work in New Zealand.
