Job summary

The Ministry for Primary Industries is seeking a Principal Compliance Officer in Christchurch. You will lead operational delivery, provide technical and strategic guidance, and support inspectors and NAIT officers in high‑risk investigations across Animal Welfare and NAIT systems.

You will travel as required, mentor staff, and collaborate with co-regulators and industry partners to ensure regulatory integrity and readiness across New Zealand.

Qualifications

• Significant experience in compliance and enforcement, ideally in Animal Welfare and/or NAIT.
• Proven experience leading investigations through to prosecution.
• Strong understanding of MPI's regulatory role and connections across agencies.

Responsibilities

• Lead and supervise inspectors on large-scale or complex investigations.
• Hold statutory appointments as an Animal Welfare Inspector and NAIT Officer as required.
• Provide strategic guidance to regional and district managers and review prosecutorial files.
