Job summary

Te Whatu Ora Taranaki in New Plymouth is seeking a Section Head Clinical Cardiac Physiologist to lead the cardiac physiology team and deliver safe, patient-centred care.

You will mentor staff, set direction, coordinate workflows, ensure quality and safety, and collaborate with Clinical Nurse Manager and Cardiac Sonography lead. The role includes up to 0.2 FTE non-clinical workload and opportunities for professional development.

Qualifications

  • Must have current SCT membership.
  • APC CPRB current or in process.
  • IBHRE certificate.
  • Minimum of 5 years post-registration experience, with leadership experience preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Lead and develop the cardiac physiology team and ensure safe, patient-centred care.
  • Coordinate workflow, prioritise patient care and allocate resources efficiently.
  • Ensure adherence to clinical protocols and support continuous quality improvement.
  • Mentor staff through education and feedback to enable growth in skills and confidence.
  • Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams and the Cardiology service to optimise service delivery.

About the Role

As a Section Head within cardiac physiology, the role extends beyond clinical expertise to include fostering a cohesive, high-performing team that delivers safe, patient-centred care. This involves providing clear direction, setting expectations and ensuring this aligns with the organisational goals and clinical standards.

A key responsibility is to support and develop staff through mentorship, education and constructive feedback thus enabling continual growth in both technical skills and professional confidence. It is essential to maintain open communication and ensure effective collaboration across multidisciplinary teams.

The team leader is responsible for coordinating workflow, prioritising patient care and ensuring efficient use of resources while maintaining quality and safety standards. This includes oversight of clinical practice, adherence to protocols and continuous quality improvement initiatives.

You will work with the Clinical Nurse Manager in operational aspect of the role to develop quality assurance framework, equipment maintenance and assist with technical aspect of your role. You will work with the Cardiac Sonography Professional lead in professional development of workforce and service. You will have up to 0.2FTE will be assigned to non-clinical workload.

The department offers;

  • Pacemaker follow up (ICD/CRT/Brady)
  • ILR implantation and follow up
  • Diagnostic Coronary Angiography
  • Ambulatory Cardiac Monitoring
  • Exercise Treadmill testing
  • Lung Function testing (This is not a core responsibility, however may be called upon to assist)

Knowledge, Skills and Experience:

  • Extensive experience working with pacemakers, ICDs, CRT and ILR devices as well as remote monitoring platforms.
  • Well-developed analytical thinking, clinical judgement and problem-solving skills.
  • Strong communication, interpersonal and teamwork skills.
  • Opportunity to contribute to departmental leadership, research and innovation within the Cardiology service.
  • Recognises and responds to diverse patient needs to support equitable care outcomes.
  • Able to plan, prioritise and coordinate work to meet short-medium-long term goals within the scope of the role.

Essential Professional Qualifications:

  • Have current membership with the SCT (The Society of Cardiopulmonary Technology NZ)
  • Have a current APC with the CPRB (Clinical Physiologists Registration Board) or actively engaged in this process.
  • BSc and Post Grad Dip. in MTEX
  • Must have Current IBHRE certificate and vast experience in managing PPM/ICD/CRT/ILR
  • Minimum of 5 years post registration experience and ideally proven leadership experience
