Job summary

ALS Environmental seeks a motivated Sample Receipt / Laboratory Technician to join our Hastings lab on a part-time, fixed-term basis. You will receive, process, and prepare environmental samples for testing, while ensuring quality and safety compliance.

Ideal candidates have science background, basic microbiology knowledge, and strong data-entry skills. You will label and track samples, assist with QC, operate lab equipment, and maintain records in a fast-paced environment.

Qualifications

• Secondary school qualifications with science subjects.
• Basic understanding of microbiology laboratory practices.
• Strong computer and data entry skills.
• Excellent attention to detail and organisational abilities.
• Ability to manage multiple tasks in a fast-paced environment.
• Commitment to health, safety and quality standards.
• Tertiary qualifications in Microbiology, Biological Sciences, Environmental Sciences, or related discipline.
• Experience using Laboratory Information Management Systems (LIMS).
• Knowledge of ISO 17025 accreditation requirements.

Responsibilities

• Receive, inspect, and register environmental samples including water, wastewater, and soil.
• Verify sample integrity, temperature, holding times, and documentation requirements.
• Liaise with clients and laboratory staff regarding sample enquiries or discrepancies.
• Label, track, and manage samples throughout the laboratory workflow.
• Prepare samples for microbiological analysis following standard operating procedures.
• Perform routine laboratory techniques and assist with quality control activities.
• Operate, calibrate, and maintain laboratory equipment.
• Maintain accurate laboratory records and support compliance with quality standards.
• Contribute to a safe, clean, and organised laboratory environment.
