Whangārei District Council is seeking a Risk Management Adviser to lead and evolve our risk and assurance programmes. This is a pivotal role within our Democracy and Assurance Department, supporting Council's strategic objectives and ensuring robust governance through effective risk oversight, internal audit, and insurance management.

Key Responsibilities
  • Provide effective management and oversight of Council's assurance activities including but not limited to risk management, insurance, and official information requests.
  • Manage internal audit and insurance portfolios.
  • Provide strategic reporting to the Risk and Audit Committee.
  • Coordinate official information requests and oversee the delegation register.
  • Champion a culture of assurance and continuous improvement.
Requirements
  • A tertiary qualification in business or equivalent experience.
  • Proven ability to build strong organisational systems and governance relationships.
  • Strategic thinking and deep understanding of risk, compliance, and audit principles.
  • Political acumen and cultural adaptability, including embracing Tikanga.
  • Knowledge of the Local Government Act and LGOIMA is a plus—but a willingness to learn is key.
  • Knowledge and/or understanding of Risk Management Standard ISO31000:2009
