Job description

Head Medical is seeking post foundation doctors keen to broaden their clinical experience within Gastroenterology. You will be based in Palmerston North; a vibrant and youthful city, set at the foot of the Tararua mountain range. It has all the facilities that you would expect of a city, yet is still compact, accessible, and easy to navigate.

  • An ideal central location to explore the rest of the North Island, including beaches in Foxton and Himatangi; fabulous Hawke’s Bay and Wairarapa vineyards; premier ski resorts and gorgeous lakes in Taupo and Rotorua.
  • Enjoy cycling and mountain biking, kayaking, hiking, golfing and more!
  • Dedicated time for professional development, and the opportunity to mentor and supervise.
  • Salary $101,492 -$143,198 NZD (depending on experience).
  • 12-month contract.

The Role

Palmerston North Hospital is a 350-bed secondary teaching hospital providing one of the largest trauma centres in New Zealand serving an urban population of 80,000 and a total population catchment of approx. 168,000. There are excellent facilities on site including a lecture theatre and library. Personal development and teaching are actively encouraged.

You will play a key role delivering high-quality patient care, while building your skills in diagnosing and managing a wide range of GI and liver conditions. This hands-on exposure is invaluable for those considering a future in gastroenterology, providing experience in endoscopic procedures, inpatient, and outpatient management, and working as part of a dedicated multidisciplinary team.

The Location

Palmerston North is a vibrant, welcoming city with an affordable cost of living, top-tier education (including Massey University’s renowned Vet School), and a buzzing social scene. Whether you’re after great cafés, restaurants, sports, or cultural events, there is always something happening. Plus, commuting is a dream—just 10-15 minutes anywhere in the city!

If you prefer a quieter, scenic lifestyle, nearby Feilding—voted New Zealand’s Most Beautiful Town 16 times—offers charming Edwardian architecture, lush gardens, and a fantastic Farmers Market every weekend.

Beyond the city, why not ski at Turangi, Turoa, or Whakapapa, sip your way through the Hawke’s Bay wine region, relax on unspoiled beaches, or road trip to Wellington in just two hours.

Whether you are looking for city convenience or small-town charm, Palmerston North & Manawatu offer the best of both worlds – making it the perfect place to live, work, and explore!

What Head Medical can do for you

Arranging a position overseas is very exciting, but we understand that it can also be daunting and time consuming. We’re the UK’s specialist in international medical recruitment and we’ve helped many Doctors relocate since we first started out in 2008. We know it’s important to balance career opportunities with lifestyle and we’ll talk through your plans and will get to know you to make sure we find the right role in the right location. Once we have secured a job for you, we’ll manage the Medical Registration and Visa application process, and support you (and your family) with the relocation itself.
