Job summary

Buller District Council seeks an experienced Regulatory Compliance Team Leader to guide and develop our compliance functions across Environmental Health, RMA compliance and Building Compliance in the Buller District. You will lead a diverse team, ensure statutory obligations are met, and provide expert regulatory guidance to staff, customers and stakeholders.

You will influence public health and sustainable development while fostering collaboration with Council, industry and government agencies.

Qualifications

  • Experience leading people in a regulatory environment.
  • Experience in regulatory compliance, environmental health, building or planning.
  • Sound knowledge of legislation, regulations, compliance processes and enforcement principles.
  • Strong organisational and problem-solving skills.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to build productive relationships while achieving regulatory outcomes.
  • A current New Zealand driver’s licence.

Buller District Council is seeking a motivated and capable Regulatory Compliance Team Leader to lead our compliance functions across Environmental Health, Resource Management Act (RMA) Compliance and Building Compliance.

About the Role

Reporting to the Group Manager Regulatory Services, you will lead and support a team responsible for delivering a diverse range of compliance activities across the district.

Key responsibilities include:
  • Leading, mentoring and developing compliance staff to achieve high performance and professional growth.
  • Managing team workloads, recruitment, training and performance programmes.
  • Overseeing regulatory compliance activities across environmental health, resource management and building compliance functions.
  • Managing Council's environmental health contractor to ensure effective delivery of statutory obligations.
  • Supporting investigations, monitoring programmes and enforcement activities under relevant legislation.
  • Providing technical guidance and regulatory advice to staff, customers and stakeholders.
  • Ensuring compliance registers, records and monitoring programmes are maintained to a high standard.
  • Contributing to policy development, business planning and budget processes.
  • Building positive working relationships across Council, industry, government agencies and the wider community.
Who Are You?

We are looking for someone with:

Essential:
  • Demonstrated experience leading and developing people in a workplace environment.
  • Experience working within a regulatory compliance, environmental health, building, planning or related regulatory field.
  • Sound knowledge of legislation, regulations, compliance processes and enforcement principles.
  • Strong organisational, investigative and problem-solving skills.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to build productive relationships while achieving regulatory outcomes.
  • A current New Zealand driver's licence.
Desirable:
  • Experience working within local government.
  • Qualification in environmental health, building regulation, planning, resource management or a related discipline.
  • Knowledge of the Building Act 2004, Resource Management Act, Food Act and associated legislation.
  • Understanding of the political and community environment in local government
