Job summary

Southern Cross Wellington Hospital in Wellington is seeking a Registered Nurse for our Surgical Ward on a permanent 0.9 FTE basis. You will provide high-quality care across a range of surgical specialties, supporting patients from admission through discharge.

Working within a multidisciplinary team, you will undertake assessments, implement care plans, administer medications, and monitor post-operative recovery, prioritising changes in patient condition with strong clinical judgement.

Qualifications

  • Current Nursing Council registration with Annual Practising Certificate (NZ).
  • At least two years’ post-registration nursing experience in a surgical ward, acute care, or comparable hospital environment.
  • HDU experience is highly regarded.
  • Surgical nursing experience across multiple specialties preferred.
  • Strong clinical assessment, decision-making, and problem-solving skills.

Responsibilities

  • Provide high-quality care to patients across a broad range of surgical specialties from admission to discharge.
  • Undertake patient assessments, implement care plans, and administer medications.
  • Monitor post-operative recovery and respond to changes in patient condition.
  • Collaborate with a multidisciplinary team to achieve excellent patient outcomes.

Southern Cross Healthcare – Wellington City, North Island

Southern Cross Wellington Hospital is a private elective surgical hospital. The hospital features day procedure facilities, five operating theatres and a modern High Dependency unit - all of which allows the hospital to provide for the needs of a variety of patients, including those requiring complex surgical procedures. Clinical services include Orthopaedic surgery, Neurosurgery, Colorectal surgery, Gynaecology, Paediatric surgery, Ear, Nose & Throat, Ophthalmology, Oncology and Urology.

First established in 1992, the hospital has seen significant additions and upgrades on the site over recent years. The new building adjacent to the hospital at 88 Hanson Street houses a state-of-the-art Day Stay surgical facility (Wellington Surgical Centre), Affinity Medical imaging and the Southern Cross Specialist Centre.

We are seeking two compassionate and motivated Registered Nurses to join our Surgical Ward at Southern Cross Wellington Hospital on a permanent 0.9 FTE basis. This is an exciting opportunity to work in a modern healthcare environment where clinical excellence, teamwork, and patient-centred care are at the heart of everything we do.

As a Registered Nurse on our Surgical Ward, you will provide high-quality care to patients across a broad range of surgical specialties, supporting them throughout their hospital journey from admission through to discharge. Working as part of a multidisciplinary team, you'll undertake patient assessments, implement care plans, administer medications, monitor post-operative recovery, and respond to changes in patient condition. Your clinical expertise, critical thinking, and ability to prioritise in a fast-paced environment will be essential to achieving excellent patient outcomes.

This role offers the opportunity to further develop your surgical nursing skills within a supportive and experienced team. You'll play an important role in supporting patients and their whānau throughout their hospital stay, helping to ensure they feel informed and well cared for.   • Current registration with the Nursing Council of New Zealand and a valid Annual Practising Certificate
  • At least two years' post-registration nursing experience within a surgical ward, acute care, or comparable hospital environment
  • Previous High Dependency Unit (HDU) experience is highly regarded
  • Surgical nursing experience and confidence caring for patients across a range of specialties
  • Strong clinical assessment, decision-making, and problem-solving skills
  • Proven ability to recognise, escalation, and manage changes in patient condition
  • Strong organisational skills with the ability to prioritise competing demands
  • A collaborative and team-focused approach
  • A genuine commitment to delivering safe, high-quality, patient-centred care
  • Experience working within a private healthcare setting is advantageous, but not essential
  • Flexibility to work a rotating roster
