Registered Nurse DOSA/SSSU Palmerston North Hospital

About the Role

As a registered Nurse in our team you will cover two main areas, DOSA and SSSU. Day of Surgery admissions (DOSA) is where you will be working to admit, care for, and discharge patients coming through operating theatres. This is a fast paced area with multiple surgical specialties and demographics. Shifts for this area start 0645, 0700, 0800, 1100, 1200 and are 8 hour shifts.

Surgical Short Stay Unit is the second main area where you would be working. This is a 6 bed Surgical short stay Unit that focuses on overnight, high turnover admissions. The aim is to discharge all six patients the next day so careful consideration is given to who goes in the unit. The shift for this area start at 0700, 1300 and 2100. Our day shifts are 8 hour shift and night shifts are 10 hour shifts.

Both areas are well supported and have a great team environment. You can expect a fast pace and everyday day there is a different list of patients. On a busy day we can have up to 70 patients through the department.

About you

To be considered for the DOSA/SSSU Nurse position you need to have

  • NZ surgical or medical hospital experience
  • Be a fantastic team player
  • Have a high standard of care
  • A current APC
  • Experience within a perioperative Service is an advantage
About the Team/Service

Our team in the perioperative Service (including DOSA/SSSU) has ten operating theatres and three procedure rooms. We cover many specialities and age groups.

Te Pae Hauora o Ruahine o Tararua – MidCentral is a 350-bed hospital in the city of Palmerston North, Manawatū, a city in the Lower North Island of New Zealand. Palmerston North Hospital is a secondary hospital and offers most medical and surgical specialties with the exception of Cardiothoracic, Plastic and Neurosurgery. The hospital serves a local population of 180,000 but is the base for a regional head and neck oncology service which has responsibility for a population of 550,000 and draws patients from Whanganui, Taranaki, and Hawke's Bay.
