Job summary

Ministry for Primary Industries (MPI) in Palmerston North is seeking a Veterinarian Reliever to provide verification services across the Manawatū–Wellington region. The role involves leading verification activities, ensuring export assurances are valid, and coordinating with operators and MPI teams.

The position requires NZ registration as a veterinarian and a full NZ driver's licence, with availability for shift work including days, nights, weekends, and holidays.

Qualifications

• Must be a New Zealand registered Veterinarian or able to obtain registration with the Veterinary Council of New Zealand.
• Hold a full New Zealand driver’s licence (or able to obtain by converting overseas licence).
• Demonstrate verbal and written communication skills and analytical reasoning.
• Demonstrate integrity, resilience, adaptability, and strong values.
• Experience in persuading and influencing, teamwork, planning and organising.
• Computer literacy with standard software (word, Excel, email).

Responsibilities

• Lead and coordinate verification activities over a range of animal products.
• Ensure official assurances for export products remain valid and auditable.
• Support operators to implement timely corrective and preventive actions.
• Collaborate with regional MPI teams and external stakeholders.
• Communicate effectively with operator staff at all levels to optimise workflow.
