Our Refugee Trauma Recovery team in Pōneke | Wellington is looking for volunteers who can provide transport for clients to and from appointments. We're looking for friendly people who can help provide a sense of connection to migrants, including former refugees and asylum seekers, who are part of this service.

Refugee wellbeing support volunteers provide practical support to clients in our Refugee Trauma Recovery service. Our Refugee Trauma Recovery team provides mental health support to former refugees, asylum seekers and other migrants. Volunteers help clients to get to and from their appointments and create opportunities for social connection.

Your tasks will include:• providing transport for clients travelling to and from appointments• supporting clients to attend community events• supporting clients to access local information
You’ll receive comprehensive training in how to give practical and social support, as well as intercultural practice. The training takes approximately eight hours and is delivered over several evenings and/or weekends. Sometimes training courses are offered during the day.
Volunteers work in teams and are supported by New Zealand Red Cross employees and other volunteers.
You’ll need to be familiar with your local area, open to working cross culturally, be resourceful and good at taking initiative.You’ll need to be flexible. There are no set shift times for this role. The time you spend with a client will vary week to week. You will share responsibilities with your team, depending on your availability. Volunteers need to commit at least four hours a week, but your time can be spread across the week. To apply for this role, you will need to commit to volunteer for a period of either three or six months.
• Proactively ensure your actions or omissions do not adversely affect the Health, Safety and Wellbeing (HSW) of yourself or others.• Participate in HSW induction, training, programmes and activities.• Follow all reasonable instructions to comply with HSW legislation and regulations.• Follow New Zealand Red Cross HSW policies, standards and procedures.• Do not undertake any activities you are not adequately trained for.• Use designated personal protective equipment (PPE) for specific work activities.• Report hazards/risks, incidents and near misses as soon as possible after the event.
You'll need to follow our Health, Safety and Wellbeing policies and procedures, which will be advised during training.
