Job description

About Marama Labs

At Marama Labs, our mission is to revolutionise the field of spectroscopy through cutting‑edge technology, transforming complex scientific challenges into practical, high‑impact solutions. As a deep‑tech startup, we are committed to delivering exceptional products that push the boundaries of innovation, driven by a deep understanding of both science and market needs. Our goal is to lead, inspire, and make a lasting contribution to industries that rely on precise, reliable spectroscopic data.

  • Wellington, New Zealand
  • Full‑time

With our revolutionary CloudSpec spectrophotometer technology already in market, Marama Labs is working with some of the world's leading life sciences manufacturers, enabling RNA therapy developers to measure drug concentration in LNP formulations in 15 seconds, down from two hours with conventional methods.

We are a small, high‑trust team that moves fast, holds itself to exceptional standards, and genuinely believes we're building something that will matter globally. If you thrive on pace, collaboration, and doing excellent work, this is your place.

THE ROLE

This is a hands‑on hardware production role at the heart of what we do. You'll be building CloudSpec instruments from the ground up: mechanical and electrical assembly, optical and chemical calibration commissioning and validation. You’ll own the quality of what leaves our production facility and be working closely with our engineering and science team, not just following instructions but understanding the physics and chemistry behind them. For the right person, this is a genuinely rare opportunity: deep‑tech, world‑class science, real ownership, and a pathway to Senior Production Technician as we scale.

What You'll Be Doing
  • Assemble CloudSpec instruments to specification - mechanical, electrical, and optical sub‑systems
  • Perform dry commissioning: execute test scripts, capture and review data, confirm device performance against specification
  • Perform wet commissioning: prepare solutions, pipette samples, and conduct chemical validation testing
  • Maintain production equipment and workspace to high standards
  • Document all commissioning test results, and non‑conformances clearly and accurately
  • Identify process improvements and raise them proactively - we want drivers, not passengers
Required
  • 2+ years of experience producing high‑value hardware or instrumentation - you've built things that matter and you know what quality looks like
  • Comfortable with both mechanical and electrical assembly work; you're good with your hands and precise by habit
  • Able to learn and apply the fundamental scientific principles underpinning our technology (UV‑Vis spectroscopy, optics, basic chemistry) - intellectual curiosity is essential, not optional
  • Meticulous attention to detail and strong reading comprehension; able to follow multi‑step commissioning procedures accurately and consistently
  • Moves at pace - you get things done without cutting corners
  • Excellent verbal and written communicator; documentation is part of the job and you take it seriously
  • Self‑motivated and resourceful; you troubleshoot before escalating
  • Genuine team player - no silos, no gatekeeping; collaborative by nature
Nice To Have
  • Engineering degree (mechanical, electrical, or related discipline)
  • GMP (Good Manufacturing Practice) experience
  • QMS (Quality Management System) experience
  • Basic scripting or data analysis ability
  • Experience in a regulated production environment
WHY JOIN US
  • Work on technology that is genuinely world‑first - patented, internationally recognised, and tackling real bottlenecks in nanomedicine development
  • Be part of a small, high‑performance team where your contribution is visible and valued every day
  • Clear progression pathway to Senior Production Technician
  • Broad exposure across hardware, optics, software, and chemistry - great for your long‑term career
  • A culture built on pace, excellence, and genuine teamwork

We care more about drive, curiosity, and the genuine conviction that you’d excel in this role than we do about a perfect match on paper. If this opportunity excites you and you believe you’d do an outstanding job, even if you don’t meet every requirement listed, we want to hear from you.
