Job summary

WSP in New Zealand is seeking a Principal Geotechnical Engineer to join our Napier business, with flexibility to be based in Napier, Taupō or Gisborne. You will provide technical direction and help grow geotechnical capability across the region.

You’ll lead complex geotechnical projects from investigation through design and construction, delivering high-quality solutions across infrastructure, land development, and hazard mitigation. A chartered engineer with NZ standards knowledge is preferred.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in Geotechnical or Civil Engineering required.
• Chartered Professional Engineer (CPEng) in Geotechnical or Civil preferred.
• 10+ years in geotechnical engineering consultancy.
• Strong project delivery and management experience.
• Deep knowledge of NZ standards, legislation and construction practices.
• Proven ability to build client relationships and win work.
• Excellent communication and stakeholder engagement skills.
• Collaborative, solutions-focused approach; valid driver’s licence.

Responsibilities

• Lead and deliver complex geotechnical projects from investigation through to design and construction observation.
• Provide expert technical advice across roads, landslides, river scour, and foundations.
• Conduct and oversee site investigations, analysis, reporting, and design.
• Perform peer reviews and ensure NZ standards compliance.
• Build and maintain client relationships and identify growth opportunities.
• Lead or contribute to proposals, bids and work programmes.
• Support technical development and continuous improvement within the team.
