Job summary

Meridian Energy is seeking a Portfolio Analyst to join the Portfolio Analytics team in New Zealand. The role focuses on optimising energy margins and hydro storage, while managing risk and forecasting market developments.

You will work with trading, generation and retail teams to translate complex analytics into actionable recommendations. Location options include Wellington or Christchurch with flexible work arrangements.

Qualifications

• Experience with energy margin optimization and hydro storage is advantageous.
• Familiarity with NZ electricity market dynamics and risk management.
• Ability to translate model results into actionable trading recommendations.

Responsibilities

• Work with Strategy & Portfolio, Retail, Generation and trading teams to optimise energy margin and hydro storage.
• Advise on risks and opportunities from hydrology, wind, transmission and outages.
• Track and forecast developments in the NZ electricity market, including demand, fuel prices and generation investment.
• Run power-flow and electricity optimisation models, and turn results into trading recommendations.
• Challenge model assumptions and improve automated analytics workflows.
• Support transformation project as required.

Our Portfolio Analysts sit in our Portfolio Analytics team, which is at the heart of the business, bringing together our generation assets and retail customers to deliver energy margin, manage risk and optimise our hydro storage on behalf of Meridian. We are about to embark on a large programme of work without our business unit aimed at transforming the way in which we do our work, this role and the team will be central to phase one of the programme.

• Work with our Strategy & Portfolio, Retail, Generation and trading teams to optimise energy margin and hydro storage, and to manage financial risk.
• Advise on risks and opportunities from hydrology, wind, transmission and generation outages.
• Track and forecast developments in the New Zealand electricity market, including demand, fuel supply, prices and generation investment.
• Run power-flow and electricity optimisation models, and turn the results into clear trading and portfolio recommendations.
• Challenge model assumptions and automated outputs, and help improve our automated analytics workflows.
• Support our transformation project as required.

• Strong analytical judgement, and the ability to explain complex findings to decision-makers in plain language.
• Familiarity with modern analytics tools such as Databricks, Python, SQL and Power BI.
• An understanding of the NZ electricity spot and forward markets, and experience with optimisation models such as SDDP or Plexos (desirable).
