Job summary

MBIE in Wellington is seeking Policy Advisors to join the Building System Performance branch. You will develop regulatory and legislative policy, engage with stakeholders, and help improve building outcomes.

This role offers exposure to policy development frameworks and a fast-paced environment, with fixed-term contracts ranging from 2 to 6 months across multiple teams.

Qualifications

MBIE is the over-arching regulator of New Zealand's building system. MBIE's building regulatory system teams provide policy and technical advice on New Zealand's building system, rules and standards, and implement building legislation and regulations to meet New Zealand's current and future needs.

Exciting opportunities are available for policy professionals to join the Building System Performance branch at MBIE. Our policy teams provide regulatory policy advice, identifying and addressing problems in the building and construction sector to ensure buildings are safe, healthy, and durable.

We are flexible and dynamic, with a big work programme, including immediate opportunities to work on:
- ensuring the building code system is fit-for-purpose
- improving efficiency in the building consent system
- ensuring the regulation of building practitioners (e.g. engineers, builders, plumbers) supports quality building work
- ensuring the earthquake-prone buildings system is workable and proportionate to the risks posed, and
- supporting the government to meet its climate change obligations.

Our people are located across Wellington, Auckland and Christchurch and we operate a ‘matrix management’ model to support the branch's work programme.

Skills and Experience Required

For the role of Policy Advisor, ideally you:

• haveexperience in solving tricky policy problems and formulating high-quality policy and regulatory advice
• have a good base of experience in public policy as a Policy Advisor, including knowledge of a range of policy development frameworks and methods, and how to apply appropriate approaches to given policy issues
• apply logical thinking and take a problem solving approach to analysing policy issues
• are able to set policy advice in a broad political, economic and strategic context
• can build relationships with stakeholders, delivery agencies and government agencies, understand their perspectives and reflect them in advice
• can use policy project management processes and have a working knowledge of policy and machinery of government processes
• have an appropriate and relevant tertiary qualification
