The Ministry for Primary Industries (MPI) in Wellington seeks a People Hub Adviser to provide high-quality generalist HR advice across a broad range of people matters, supporting managers and employees in a fast-paced environment. Job title: People Hub Adviser Role type: Full time, Fixed term or Secondment through to August 2027 Location: Wellington Salary band & range: General Salary Range F $77,992 to $90,999 depending on skills and experience

About the Role

Kōrero mō te Tūranga As a People Hub Adviser, you will provide high-quality generalist HR advice and guidance across a broad range of people matters, supporting managers and employees throughout the organisation. Working in a fast-paced, customer-focused environment, you will act as the first escalation point for more complex enquiries, ensuring advice and outcomes are consistent, practical, and aligned with New Zealand employment legislation, employment agreements, and organisational policies. You will play a key role in building capability across the People Hub by coaching and mentoring People Hub Coordinators, providing quality oversight, and supporting continuous improvement initiatives. Working closely with People & Capability subject matter experts, you will contribute to the implementation of new tools, processes, and ways of working, while developing strong relationships and enhancing your own advisory expertise. In this role, you will:

  • Provide accurate and timely generalist HR advice to managers and employees.

  • Take ownership of customer queries through to resolution, seeking specialist advice where required.
  • Apply best practice and ensure compliance with employment legislation and employment agreements.
  • Coach, mentor, and support People Hub Coordinators to build capability and confidence.
  • Provide quality oversight of guidance, administrative, and transactional activities.
  • Build effective working relationships and communicate confidently with stakeholders at all levels.
  • Collaborate with People & Capability subject matter experts to access specialist knowledge and expertise.
  • Deliver efficient, customer-focused service in a high-volume operational environment.
  • Support continuous improvement, change initiatives, and the implementation of new tools, processes, and HR systems.
About You

Mōu You enjoy working in a fast-paced, customer-focused environment and is confident providing generalist HR advice across a broad range of people matters. Comfortable making informed decisions, you can navigate complex queries with curiosity, sound judgement, and attention to detail. You build credibility quickly, communicate confidently with stakeholders at all levels, and remain calm, professional, and resilient. You are passionate about developing others and enjoy coaching and mentoring colleagues to build capability and confidence. Acting as a trusted escalation point, you are comfortable peer reviewing work, providing constructive guidance, and supporting the resolution of complex issues. You take a proactive approach to continuous improvement, contribute to projects and change initiatives, and are eager to expand your knowledge of HR and payroll practices across different business areas. Experience working within the public sector, including an understanding of the machinery of government and the wider operating environment, would be advantageous. Alongside this, a relevant HR qualification is desirable but not essential. You do not need to meet all of the role requirements to apply.
