Job summary

Hamilton City Council’s Community Group is seeking a Parks Maintenance Officer to maintain parks, playgrounds, and sporting facilities across Hamilton. You will work to keep green spaces safe, well presented, and enjoyable for residents and visitors, contributing to the city’s wellbeing.

With responsibilities spanning safety tasks, contractor collaboration, and public engagement, you’ll need a can-do attitude, strong teamwork, and physical fitness to handle manual work.

Qualifications

  • NZ Class 2 driver's licence required.
  • First aid certification required.
  • Experience in parks maintenance.
  • Experience in general maintenance/handyperson activities.
  • Strong work ethic with ability to plan and execute tasks.
  • Good physical fitness for manual work.
  • Can-do attitude; able to manage multiple priorities.
  • Flexible and adaptable to changing workloads.
  • Ability to work independently and in a team.
  • Problem-solving and continuous improvement mindset.

Responsibilities

This role sits in the Council’s Community Group, which comprises of community focused services such as Hamilton Pool, Parks and Recreation, Hamilton City Librariesand the city’s three main visitor attractions.

The Parks and Recreation team maintain Hamilton’s Park network for our community.Our work ensures Hamilton is beautiful, fun, connected, and meets our community wants and needs, making our city one we’re all proud of.

Job Description

As a Parks Maintenace Officer, you will play a key role in maintaining and enhancing Hamilton’s green spaces, sporting facilities, playgrounds, and other council infrastructure. Your work will directly contribute to the wellbeing of Hamiltonians and support our vision of making Hamilton the best place to live.

Key Responsibilities

  • Perform general safety maintenance tasks across parks, playgrounds, and sporting facilities.
  • Ensure all work meets high standards of safety, quality, and presentation.
  • Collaborate with contractors and the wider Parks and Recreation team.
  • Work independently and as part of a team to meet deadlines.
  • Engage with the public in a friendly and professional manner.
  • Maintain a customer-focused approach, considering the needs of facility users.
  • Manage parks rubbish and ground litter.

Qualifications

  • Current NZfull driver’s license - Class 2 essential.
  • Current first aid certification.
  • Experience in parks maintenance.
  • Experience in general maintenance /handyperson activities.
  • Strong work ethic, you must have the ability to plan things in detail and execute different work programs using a range of resources.
  • Able to work independently with good physical fitness and able to cope with the demands of manual work.
  • Can-do attitude, able to manage multiple priorities, while maintaining quality service delivery.
  • Flexible and adaptable to manage shifting work requirements and varying volumes of work
  • Ability to work independently and within a team.
  • Passion for continuous improvement, solving problems and delivering efficient solutions.
  • Ability to think on your feet and problem solve to ensure best outcomes for our customers and our team.

Starting at $29.90 per hour, dependent on skills and experience.
