Overview

Steel & Tube, one of New Zealand’s premier steel solutions providers with over 70 years of history, is seeking an experienced Operations Manager to oversee our Wellington Distribution Centre. This senior role is pivotal in driving operational excellence, ensuring customer satisfaction, and leading a high-performing team in a fast-paced environment.

As the Operations Manager, you’ll spearhead all warehouse, logistics, and operational activities for the Wellington branch, ensuring seamless delivery of customer orders while maintaining strict compliance with quality, health, and safety standards. You’ll manage budgets, optimise efficiencies, and lead a team of supervisors and staff to achieve key performance targets. Working closely with the Regional Manager, you’ll implement national strategies, foster continuous improvement, and enhance customer experiences across all touchpoints. This role requires strategic oversight of freight, contractor relationships, and site services, ensuring cost-effective operations and adherence to Steel & Tube’s core values: United, Open, Trusted, Integrity, and Accountable.

In this critical position, you’ll also champion health and safety, embedding a culture of best practices across the site. You’ll drive change management initiatives, oversee compliance audits, and develop your team through coaching and training. Your ability to build strong relationships with internal teams, customers, and external providers (including 3PL/4PL partners) will be key to success. Key Responsibilities

• Lead warehouse & logistics operations across two branches – Distribution and Fasteners
• Plan and direct warehouse and logistics activities to meet customer fulfilment goals
• Ensure compliance with quality, health, safety, and environmental standards
• Manage budgets, control costs, and optimise labour, freight, and maintenance efficiencies
• Lead, train, and coach operational staff to achieve best practice standards
• Drive continuous improvement and change management initiatives
• Build strong relationships with customers, transport providers, and service contractors
• Provide monthly reporting on H&S, productivity, and customer service metrics

About You

• Minimum 7 years’ hands-on warehouse operations experience
• Proven expertise in warehouse best practices and freight management
• Strong leadership, coaching, and team management skills
• Experience with continuous improvement (e.g., Lean Six Sigma) is a plus
• Excellent communication and relationship-building abilities
• Proactive, results-driven, and committed to health and safety
