Job summary

Mahitahi Trust is seeking an Occupational Therapist to join our community mental health team in Avondale. You will assess clients with mental health challenges, develop tailored care plans, and apply evidence-based therapies to support independence and well-being.

Requirements include NZ-recognized OT degree or OTBNZ-validated overseas qualification, NZ registration, and a full NZ driver’s license. Collaborative practice in a culturally responsive, client-centered model is essential.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s or master’s degree in occupational therapy from a recognized NZ institution or OTBNZ assessed qualification from overseas.
  • Relevant clinical experience as an Occupational Therapist.
  • Full and valid NZ Driver's Licence and strong interpersonal skills.
  • Commitment to ethical and professional standards and client-centered care.
  • Cultural competence and ability to work with diverse populations.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct comprehensive assessments to understand clients' mental health challenges, strengths, and goals.
  • Develop personalized care plans to improve mental well-being and independence.
  • Implement evidence-based interventions for emotional, cognitive, and psychosocial needs.
  • Help clients regain daily living skills, coping strategies, and resilience.
  • Provide psychoeducation to clients and whanau to foster understanding and support.
  • Evaluate progress and adjust support plans to achieve outcomes.
  • Ensure compliance with ethics, standards, and relevant legislation.

Occupational Therapist - Community Mental Health

As an Occupational Therapist, you will play a crucial role in enhancing the quality of life for individuals by helping them overcome physical, cognitive, emotional, or environmental challengesand achieve their highest level of independence and well-being.

Responsibilities
  • Conduct comprehensive assessments to understand clients' mental health challenges, strengths, and goals.
  • Develop personalized care plans that focus on enhancing clients' mental well-being, independence, and quality of life.
  • Implement evidence-based interventions and therapeutic techniques to address clients' emotional, cognitive, and psychosocial needs.
  • Work with clients to regain and improve daily living skills, coping strategies, and emotional resilience.
  • Provide psychoeducation to clients and their whanau to foster understanding and support.
  • Continuously evaluate and document clients' progress, adjusting support plans as necessary to achieve desired outcomes.
  • Ensure compliance with all relevant ethics, standards and relevant legislation.
Ngā pūkenga, ngā tohu ōu - What you will need
  • Bachelor’s or master’s degree in occupational therapy from a recognized New Zealand institution or;
  • OTBNZ assessed occupational therapy qualification from overseas
  • Relevant clinical experience as an Occupational Therapist.
  • Full and Valid NZ Drivers License
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Commitment to ethical and professional standards.
  • Cultural competence and sensitivity to work with diverse populations.
  • Knowledge of motivational interviewing techniques.
  • Empathy, patience, and a commitment to client-centered care.
  • Ability to work effectively in a team-based environment.
