Job description

Neurology Specialist – Palmerston North

We are looking for a Neurologist to join our team of experienced health professionals with a focus on the delivery of high quality specialist care to the growing population.

About the role and team:

We want to grow the neurology service to help develop responsive ways of meeting the needs of our growing population while enriching models of care across the region. You will join three other Neurologists in our Palmerston North service. If you are someone who is enthusiastic around service improvement and working in new ways as part of a multidisciplinary team, we want to talk to you!

- The job is ideal for a general neurologist who is comfortable in the management of patients in acute and outpatient settings. All neurologists will be expected to see patients in general neurology clinics but there will be opportunity to develop subspecialty clinics and such interests are encouraged. Currently the service provides an inpatient consult service, but with successful recruitment, the plan will be to develop a fully staffed inpatient neurology and stroke team.

All standard neurology services are available including stroke thrombolysis, an active botulinum toxin clinic, a clinical neurophysiology unit providing EEG and EMG services, access to an infusion unit for disease modifying MS therapies along with a dedicated headache clinic. There is scope to expand on these depending on the successful applicant's areas of expertise.

- We work closely with neuroradiology and neurosurgery in Wellington, along with the Neurology service in Wellington as our tertiary referral centre for additional care such as stroke clot retrieval.

If you are interested in a role which provides the opportunity to maintain and build on your skills, this will be a good opportunity to take your career to the next stage. The service looks to create a team of physicians with complementing skills.

About our organisation:

The facility is a 350-bed hospital in the city of Palmerston North, Manawatū, a city in the Lower North Island of New Zealand. The hospital serves a local population of 180,000 but is the base for a regional head and neck oncology service which has responsibility for a population of 550,000 and draws patients from Whanganui, Taranaki, and Hawke's Bay.

Employing over 2500 people, we offer a supportive work environment that accepts and values all employees. We actively seek Māori kaimahi into our workforce and provide an environment which delivers our commitment to equity, diversity, and inclusion.

What can we offer you?

  • A diverse, dynamic and collegial team environment
  • Ongoing training and development opportunities
  • Six weeks annual leave per annum
  • 10 paid days per annum available for continued medical education including a generous allowance towards costs of course and travel
  • Generous relocation packages for national and international candidates
