Job description

  • Additional role in our Network Operations Centre
  • We’re welcoming applicants wanting to move into the control room – we’ll train you!
  • Fantastic team based in either Dunedin or Cromwell

We’re growing our team and looking for a Network Shift Coordinator (Network Controller) to oversee the effective and safe running of our critical infrastructure operations. Whether you’re based in Cromwell or Dunedin, this is your opportunity to work in a high-energy, collaborative environment where you’ll play a crucial role in keeping the power flowing and lights on.

There’s never been a better time to be in the energy sector, there’s never been a better time to join Aurora Energy.

Aurora Energy is one of the largest electricity networks in Aotearoa New Zealand. We own and manage the network that delivers electricity to some of the fastest growing areas and over the most diverse terrain in Te Waipounamu South Island. We deliver a safe, reliable and sustainable electricity supply to a population of more than 200,000 residents in Ōtepoti Dunedin, Central Otago/Wānaka and Tāhuna Queenstown. Our purpose is enabling the energy future of our communities.

About the Role

As our newest Network Shift Coordinator, you’ll be given all the training you require to become competent in managing both planned and unplanned work on our network. Using advanced SCADA systems, you’ll monitor and control assets, handle network switching, and coordinate responses to faults - all while ensuring safety and reliability.

Training is provided through significant mentoring and hands-on coaching. You won’t be left alone or on shift until you’re confident and competent in the role.

This is a shift-based role where you’ll work 4 on, 4 off, 2 - 12-hour day and 2 12-hour night shifts (7am–7pm or 7pm–7am), and also normal 8-hour working days for a number of weeks post your shift rotation. Rosters are planned 12-months in advance, so you’ll have plenty of time to plan your life and ensure balance.

Why Join Us?

  • Growth: We’re expanding our team, and this new role offers a structured training pathway and opportunities to grow within a very exciting industry, and time of complete change and transformation.
  • Teamwork: You’ll be part of a welcoming and professional team who value collaboration, open communication, and keep our network ‘on’. They are also very calm under pressure and patient as you learn the ropes.
  • Impact: Your work will ensure the reliability and efficiency of power supply to our customers—a responsibility that truly makes a difference.

What We’re Looking For

There are a number of backgrounds that you could come from, including:

  • Experience in the electricity supply industry in a Network Operations Centre, already having performed this role within another organisation.
  • A field-based role, where you’re looking for your next step, and the Control Room sounds like something you’re keen to progress in!
  • Another comparable role, such as air-traffic control, airline pilots, the navy control room, or another control centre where pressure, stressful situations and on-the-go problem solving is a must.

As a person, you’ll ideally bring:

  • Strong planning, exceptional communication, and problem-solving skills.
  • The ability to handle pressure, adapt to regular rotating shifts, and thrive in a fast-paced environment. Resilience is key to thrive in an environment like this, as well as self-management.

Why You’ll Love Our Team

We are small and mighty, with a relaxed yet focused culture. We work closely together using live communication tools to ensure seamless coordination, and we value a positive, proactive attitude. We see diversity as a strength and welcome applications from anyone who has what it takes, regardless of gender, ethnicity or background.

If you’re ready to take on an exciting and rewarding role in the electricity industry, we’d love to hear from you. Join us in powering up our communities.
