Job description

As an Electronic Technician you will be the ship’s electronic expert. You will learn to maintain a wide range of cutting edge technological systems. Or you may specialise as a Weapon Technician, maintaining the ship’s arsenal of weapons and systems. You’ll have the opportunity to earn as you learn on board, sailing local and international waters, and sampling foods, cultures and scenic attractions of coastal port towns.

About the role

The ship’s electronic experts play a vital role in ensuring operational readiness, handling advanced weapons, communications, and sensor systems.

As an Electronic Technician, you will test, maintain, and repair the ship’s electronic equipment, including the combat management system, data and satellite communication systems, networks, CCTV, radar, sonar, and navigation equipment.

As a Weapon Technician, you are responsible for testing, maintaining, and repairing the ship’s arsenal, such as small arms, medium‑calibre machine guns, torpedoes, surface‑to‑air missiles, and naval guns.

There may be a return of service period for this trade.

Job on base

Engineering positions on the naval base provide a break from life at sea and offer further training and experience in ship maintenance, repair, technical administration, and fleet support.

You will be assigned to a maintenance department or the Weapon Engineering School to support your professional development or the learning of junior engineering students.

Job on deployment

While afloat, it is your responsibility to ensure electronic sensors and communication systems function properly. Weapon Technicians must keep weapon systems operational to enable the ship to fight across all domains.

You will also assist with general shipboard duties such as boat launch/recovery, port operations, crane handling, helicopter landings, ship security, and emergency response drills.

Deployment offers opportunities to experience ports across New Zealand and overseas, including Pacific Rim cities.

Training and career progression

Upon enlistment, you’ll be posted to Devonport Navy Base, Auckland, for 16 weeks of basic military training covering teamwork, naval history, drills, core skills, first aid, and fitness. Following this, you will complete Able Technician training.
