Job summary

The University of Auckland seeks an experienced Medical Lead to provide clinical leadership and strategic guidance within UHCS. You will shape primary healthcare delivery for a diverse student population and lead a team of clinicians delivering patient-centred care.

Working with the General Manager and senior leaders, you will contribute to governance, quality improvement, and service planning while combining clinical practice with leadership in a university health service setting.

Qualifications

• Current registration with the Medical Council of New Zealand and a current practising certificate.
• Significant experience working in General Practice or primary healthcare.
• Demonstrated clinical leadership experience and the ability to mentor clinicians.
• Strong understanding of clinical governance, quality improvement, and patient safety principles.
• Excellent communication and relationship-building skills.
• Experience working effectively within multidisciplinary healthcare teams.

Responsibilities

• Provide clinical leadership and support to medical practitioners within UHCS.
• Promote excellence in clinical practice, patient safety, and quality improvement initiatives.
• Support clinical governance activities and ensure compliance with professional standards and legislation.
• Contribute to service planning, operational decision-making, and strategic initiatives.
• Work collaboratively with nurses, counsellors, psychologists, and admin staff.
• Support workforce development, mentoring, and professional growth within the medical team.
• Maintain a high standard of clinical care through direct patient consultations.
• Support the development and implementation of evidence-based healthcare practices.
• Build strong relationships with internal stakeholders and external healthcare providers.
• Contribute to a culture of continuous improvement, innovation, and student-centred service delivery.

We are seeking an experienced and inspiring Medical Lead to provide clinical leadership and strategic direction within our University Health and Counselling Service.

This is a unique opportunity to combine clinical excellence with leadership in a purpose-driven environment that places student wellbeing at the heart of everything we do. As Medical Lead, you will play a key role in shaping the delivery of primary healthcare services for a diverse student population while supporting a team of dedicated clinicians to provide outstanding patient-centred care.

Working closely with the General Manager and senior leadership team, you will contribute to service planning, clinical governance, quality improvement initiatives, and the ongoing development of a positive, collaborative, and high-performing clinical culture.

Key responsibilities include

• Providing clinical leadership and support to medical practitioners within UHCS

This role combines clinical leadership with hands‑on practice, allowing you to continue delivering care while helping drive service excellence and positive health outcomes for students.

This is a full-time, 37.5 hours per week role on a permanent contract.
