Job summary

Health New Zealand | Te Whatu Ora is seeking a Medical Laboratory Technician for Diagnostic Genetics, LabPlus in Auckland. Join a leading hospital laboratory providing essential genetic testing services and quality systems aligned to ISO 15189.

You will work across specimen processing, nucleic acid extraction, and advanced molecular workflows, supporting scientists and clinicians to deliver accurate results for inherited disorders, prenatal conditions, and cancer.

Qualifications

• Qualified Medical Laboratory Technician registered with the Medical Sciences Council of New Zealand (or eligible for registration) and hold a current APC.
• Previous experience in a medical laboratory environment.
• Experience with molecular techniques, nucleic acid extraction, or diagnostic laboratory workflows would be advantageous.
• Understanding of quality systems and laboratory accreditation requirements, including ISO 15189 principles.
• Excellent organisational skills with the ability to prioritise workload effectively.

Responsibilities

• Specimen processing, nucleic acid extraction, laboratory workflows, data handling, quality management activities, and operation of specialised technologies.
• Work across a diverse testing portfolio supporting chromosome analysis, microarray testing, molecular genetics, and NGS workflows.
• Collaborate with Medical Laboratory Scientists, Clinical Scientists, Pathologists, and other healthcare professionals to ensure timely and reliable results.

About the Role

Join one of New Zealand's most advanced and innovative diagnostic genetics laboratories and become part of the team that helps deliver genetic answers for patients and whānau across Aotearoa.

As a Medical Laboratory Technician within Diagnostic Genetics, you will provide the essential technical foundation that enables our scientists and pathologists to deliver accurate, high-quality genetic testing. Your work will involve specimen processing, nucleic acid extraction, laboratory workflows, data handling, quality management activities, and the operation of specialised technologies that support a broad range of molecular and cytogenetic testing services.

This is a unique opportunity to work in a highly specialised healthcare environment where the work you do directly contributes to the diagnosis and management of inherited disorders, prenatal conditions, childhood diseases, and cancer.

As a technician, you may work across a diverse testing portfolio, supporting technologies and processes used in chromosome analysis, microarray testing, molecular genetics, and next generation sequencing workflows. As part of a collaborative multidisciplinary team, you will work closely with Medical Laboratory Scientists, Clinical Scientists, Pathologists, and other healthcare professionals to ensure patients receive timely and reliable results.

About You

To be successful in this role, you will have the following skills and attributes:

• Qualified Medical Laboratory Technician registered with the Medical Sciences Council of New Zealand (or eligible for registration) and hold a current APC.
