Health New Zealand | Te Whatu Ora is seeking two Medical Laboratory Scientists to expand our germline genomic testing team. You will analyze, interpret, and report genomic tests using NGS, contributing to high-quality patient care from the Molecular Genetics section of LabPlus in Auckland.

Ideal candidates have strong molecular diagnostic experience, attention to detail and a commitment to excellence, with opportunities across the Diagnostic Genetics laboratory.

Qualifications

  • Qualified Medical Laboratory Scientist registered with the Medical Sciences Council of NZ and current APC.
  • Experience in next generation sequencing and germline variant curation is essential.
  • Previous experience in a medical laboratory carrying out molecular diagnostic techniques is essential.
  • Methodical and organised approach with focus on accuracy and data quality.
  • Good knowledge of ISO15189 standards.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication.
  • Flexibility to suit service demands and deadlines.
  • Working knowledge of computer based systems within a Medical Laboratory.

Responsibilities

About the Role

As demand for genetic testing continues to grow, were expanding our team and seeking two Medical Laboratory Scientists with experience in delivering high-quality germline genomic testing. In this role, youll work with advanced molecular techniques including Next Generation Sequencing (NGS) to provide accurate, timely results that directly impact patient care.

Youll be involved in the analysis, interpretation, and clinical reporting of genomic tests, ensuring precision and quality at every step. A strong background in clinical genomic testing, attention to detail, and commitment to excellence are essential.

This is an exciting time to join us. Through collaboration with the University of Aucklands Precision Medicine Initiative, were enhancing our germline testing portfolio and driving innovation in genomic diagnostics. While your primary base will be the Molecular Genetics section, there may be the opportunity to work across other areas of the Diagnostic Genetics laboratory, gaining exposure to a diverse range of techniques and clinical scenarios.

LabPLUS is an IANZ-accredited medical laboratory and New Zealand's largest referral hospital laboratory, delivering world-class diagnostic services from its Auckland base. The Diagnostic Genetics laboratory provides comprehensive cytogenetic and molecular genetic testing services. We perform prenatal and postnatal testing for inherited disorders, carrier screening, predictive testing, chromosome analysis, microarray testing, and an expanding range of molecular oncology assays. This is a rapidly evolving field, and our laboratory is at the forefront of adopting new technologies that improve diagnostic capability and patient care.

About you

To be successful in this role you will have the following skills and attributes:

  • Qualified Medical Laboratory Scientist registered with the Medical Sciences Council of NZ and current APC.
  • Experience in next generation sequencing and germline variant curation is essential.
  • Previous experience in a medical laboratory carrying out molecular diagnostic techniques is essential.
