Job summary

Awanui Labs - Queenstown invites applications for a Medical Laboratory Technician in our Core Laboratory. This permanent part-time role runs Saturday to Tuesday, 32 hours per week, based in Queenstown.

You will contribute to essential laboratory operations and patient service, with opportunities to develop skills in a high‑quality diagnostic setting. The successful candidate will work methodically under strict quality procedures, perform phlebotomy and specimen processing, and enter data

Qualifications

• Must work methodically with strict quality procedure guidelines.

• Eligible to work in New Zealand; valid full NZ driver’s licence is preferred.

Responsibilities

• Conduct laboratory work including preparing, sorting, and processing specimens.
• Perform phlebotomy procedures and collect specimens in accordance with protocols.
• Participate in on-call duties as required.
• Enter patient and test information accurately into laboratory systems.
• Answer telephone enquiries and assist clients professionally.
• Work independently and collaboratively as part of a team.

About the role | Mō te tūranga:

We are seeking for a motivated and enthusiastic individual to join our Core Laboratory as Medical Laboratory Technicians. This is a permanent part-time position (Saturday – Tuesday 32 hrs a week), offering a fantastic opportunity to gain valuable experience, develop your skills, and contribute to essential laboratory operations.

In this role, you will support the daily operations of the laboratory by performing a range of essential tasks, including demonstrating strong attention to detail and organisational skills, and maintaining a commitment to high-quality service and laboratory standards.

Key Responsibilities:

• Conduct laboratory work, including preparing, sorting, and processing specimens.
• Perform phlebotomy procedures and collect specimens in accordance with laboratory protocols.
• Participate in on-call duties as required.
• Accurately enter patient and test information into laboratory systems.
• Answer telephone enquiries and assist clients professionally.
• Manage competing priorities and work effectively under pressure.
• Demonstrate problem-solving skills and maintain a high degree of accuracy.
• Learn new skills and adapt to changes in procedures and protocols.
• Work independently and collaboratively as part of a team.

To be successful in this role you need to have:

• The ability to work in a methodical manner adhering to strict quality procedure guidelines.
• Customer focus and commitment to providing a high quality of service to internal and external customers with effective interpersonal skills.
• A sound knowledge of medical terminology, and laboratory operations including safety, and hands‑on practical experience is preferred.
• Must be a team player with initiative, good interpersonal and communication skills and possess the ability to work in a dynamic environment with competing priorities.
• Eligibility to work in New Zealand.
• Valid full NZ Drivers Licence.

If you do not yet have your registration with the Medical Sciences Council of New Zealand, we will also consider candidates who are in the process of becoming qualified.
