Job summary

Auckland Council is seeking a strategic leader to head Budget Process & Data, driving budgeting, forecasting and financial data management across a complex organisation.

You will transform processes, strengthen planning frameworks, and lead a high-performing finance team, enabling better governance and decision-making across the Council and its partners.

Qualifications

  • 10+ years' experience with financial planning data, models and systems in a large organisation.
  • Experience in budgeting, forecasting, financial modelling and data governance.
  • Proven leadership of finance teams through significant organisational change.
  • Ability to translate strategic objectives into delivery roadmaps.

Responsibilities

  • Lead the transformation of budgeting, forecasting, data and financial planning processes to build a modern FP&A capability.
  • Strengthen planning frameworks, forecasting capability and governance of financial data.
  • Drive continuous improvement across data management, modelling, systems and reporting.
  • Lead stakeholder engagement and resolve issues relating to data, processes and systems.
  • Inspire, coach and develop a team of finance professionals to embrace innovation.

Are you a strategic financial leader with a passion for data, systems, and continuous improvement? We are seeking an experienced Manager Budget Process & Data to lead and evolve the budgeting, forecasting, and financial data management processes that support one of New Zealand's largest and most complex organisations.

This role is not simply responsible for managing existing budgeting and planning processes. It is a key leadership role in shaping Auckland Council's future Planning and Analysis capability, helping create more integrated planning, stronger financial insights, improved decision support, and a modern data-enabled planning environment.

What you'll be doing

As Manager Budget Process & Data, you will:

  • Lead the transformation of Auckland Council's budgeting, forecasting, data and financial planning processes, helping build a modern Financial Planning and Analysis capability that strengthens executive and governance decision‑making across the organisation
  • Play a key role in developing a future‑state Financial Planning and Analysis function by strengthening planning frameworks, forecasting capability, financial data governance, and long‑term organisational planning maturity. Ensure the integrity, quality, and governance of financial planning data through robust systems and processes.
  • Drive continuous improvement initiatives across financial data management, modelling, systems, and reporting.
  • Lead stakeholder engagement and issue resolution relating to financial data, processes, and systems.
  • Inspire, coach, and develop a team of technical finance specialists to embrace innovation and deliver exceptional outcomes.

You are a collaborative and influential finance professional who combines deep technical expertise with strong leadership capability. You enjoy solving complex problems, building trusted relationships, and challenging traditional ways of working to deliver better outcomes.

You will bring:

  • A tertiary qualification in Finance, Commerce, Business, or a related discipline.
  • 10+ years' experience working with financial planning data, models, and systems within a large, complex organisation.
  • Extensive experience with enterprise financial systems, ideally SAP.
  • Demonstrated expertise across budgeting, forecasting, financial modelling, and data management.
  • Demonstrated experience leading teams through significant organisational change, building engagement and capability in evolving environments.
  • Ability to develop and communicate a compelling vision for future‑state financial planning and analysis, translating strategic objectives into practical delivery roadmaps.
  • Experience leading, coaching, and developing highly skilled finance professionals.
  • Excellent stakeholder management skills, with the ability to influence and engage senior leaders.
  • Strong analytical and problem‑solving abilities, with meticulous attention to detail.
  • An understanding of local government environments would be advantageous.
