Job description

Come and make a difference with us

At Western Bay of Plenty District Council, everything we do is about making the everyday better — and helping our communities thrive, now and into the future.

Western Bay is a District undergoing significant growth and transformation. From planning for future communities to delivering the infrastructure that supports them, we're focused on getting the fundamentals right — and preparing for what comes next.

We're also focused on our people. At Western Bay, we believe in investing in and empowering our teams to grow, lead, and achieve their goals. Because when our people thrive, our communities do too.

If you're motivated by making the everyday better, helping people thrive, and leaving things better than you found them — we'd love to hear from you.

The opportunity

We are seeking a hands-on problem solver to join our transportation team as a Maintenance Contract Engineer, supporting the successful delivery of our road maintenance and renewal programmes. In this role, you will help drive performance, innovation, and service excellence across our network, while contributing to the timely and efficient maintenance of Council's transportation assets — including 920 km of sealed carriageway, 153 km of unsealed carriageway, and 249 bridges.

Your Key Responsibilities Will Include

  • Working with our Team Leader: Road Maintenance to deliver on Council's aspirations to be a paragon of road network maintenance.
  • Supporting the procurement of road maintenance suppliers.
  • Participating in the programming and prioritisation of routine, reactive, and planned maintenance activities.
  • Supervising suppliers to ensure that Council's requirements are met, and all activities are carried out in accordance with the Health and Safety at Work Act 2015.
  • Ensuring that customers are provided with accurate and timely information.

To set you up for success, you'll

  • Be familiar with the mechanics of local government,
  • Possess thorough knowledge of road construction, maintenance techniques, and engineering principles,
  • Possess strong interpersonal skills
  • Be familiar with RAMM
  • Be able to interpret engineering drawings, specifications, and technical reports
  • Have experience with NZS3910:2013 and/or NZS3917:2013.

What We Offer

  • Five weeks annual leave
  • A competitive employment package - including subsidised medical insurance
  • Flexible work arrangements and a pet friendly work environment
  • Sick leave on commencement of employment
  • Learning and development opportunities
  • Access to wellbeing resources and workplace support
  • Assistance to relocate to the area
  • Free onsite parking

Applicants for this position should have NZ residency or a valid NZ work permit.

Applications close 11.55pm Sunday, 27 July 2025
