Job summary

Auckland Council is hiring a Lifeguard for Birkenhead Pool and Leisure Centre. Team Member is the official title, with two permanent part-time roles and early morning availability. You will supervise, assist customers, enforce pool rules, and respond to emergencies while keeping facilities clean and safe.

Candidates must be strong swimmers, hold a PLPC, and pass a quick swim test. Training runs Sep 28–Oct 9, 2026, with a supportive, diverse workplace focused on staff wellbeing and development.

Qualifications

• Strong swimming ability and commitment to safety.
• Must hold Pool Lifeguard Practising Certificate (PLPC) and pass the required swim test.

Team Member, Lifeguard | Birkenhead Pool and Leisure Centre

Working as a lifeguard is an opportunity for you to make a real difference in the community. Lifeguards are the key to ensuring a safe environment for our customers and are essential to the successful running of our aquatic facilities.

Pool lifeguards are observant, patient, and good with people. Their skill set means they have the confidence to act in a quick, responsible, and calm way.

As a Lifeguard you are responsible for:

• Providing a safe environment through proactive supervision and positive interaction with customers.
• Educating and enforcing pool rules.
• Responding to any First Aid emergencies.
• Ensuring our pool and the surrounding areas are always clean.

We are looking to fill two permanent part-time positions. Shifts below:

• 11-hour: Monday and Tuesday (5:30am-11:30am)
• 11-hour: Saturday (12:00pm-6:30pm) & Thursday (3:00pm - 8:30pm; 9:30pm finish during terms 2&3)

You will be required to attend a 2-week training dates below. Monday to Friday, 8am-4pm (weekdays):

He kōrero mōu: About you

We are looking for people who are strong swimmers, dedicated to helping others. To work as a pool lifeguard in New Zealand, you will need to hold a Pool Lifeguard Practising Certificate (PLPC). The first step in becoming a lifeguard for Auckland Council is to be able to pass this swim test. Please only apply for this position if you feel you can:

• Swim 200m in under 6 minutes
• Swim 25m sidestroke
• Swim 50m breaststroke
• Retrieve an object from the bottom of the pool
• Tread water for 5 minutes

Pay rate: Living Wage $29.90/h
